spiders
spiders, arachne, arthropods, web-spinners, fly catchers, creatures that have , like so many others in this world, lived far before us. they disturb us with their odd numbered legs, they inspire us with their intricate web constructions and they intrigue us as to how far their intellect and cunning can spread.
I have slowly developed an intrigue with things arachnid. their bodies give off an idea they were designed to frighten yet draw attention, and even though their intricate silken nets are like beautifully constructed paintings they are still used as tools for slaughtering insects. I take great inspiration from these things…but I still, to this day, am frightened. why is this? I often ask, how can someone admire from afar something so perplexing yet come to fear it in shocking despair when it is within close vicinity. before I wrote this, shall we say, theoretical philosophical piece or however you choose to see it. I was sitting nonchalantly on my bed, reading. suddenly I look to there was one on my arm a few moments ago, shook it off, it was the size of one of my little toy cars, I tried to pick it up with some paper but I could hear the pitter patter of its legs on the paper and I dropped it, as it made its way down my bed I hastily launched a book at it, but I know it's still out there, and it's probably plotting it return. It is thanks to this familiar scene that I record this written work now, why do I insist on admiring such horrific creatures despite their frightening disturbances? and why does it feel such a tiresome cliche to repeat those exact words?.
You see I believe our fears are often based on the close quarters of our state of security, the way we perceive something we find unsettling based on where, why and how it is. that is why so many people believe a zombie apocalypse will actually happen. The same way we look at animals behind glass cages is the same I look at spiders weaving their prey in silken straightjackets outside my very window. when protected from the outside our sense of mind is dulled so that we do not feel threatened or, to a surprisingly greater extent, afraid. er can extend idea, for example should you see an african wild dog at the zoo, you are content as it is captive, but will easily panic should one present itself in the dark, snarling and baring its teeth and ready to eviscerate your flesh from your bone. on the other hand, in the mythical sense, we find creatures such as dragons thrilling and exciting, especially as we believe they may merely be stuff of legend. however should a large, airborne fire breathing reptile swoop down from above, hell in its eyes, then we will run as if our lives depend on it.
I draw spiders and their creations, but I still shiver at the thought of their delicate, finger-like legs upon my skin. yet perhaps what I confuse with fear is merely excitement. but I digress. In conclusion it is wholly possible that the things we fear the most, although you are free to ridicule, argue and diverge this idea, are perhaps more than we perceive them to be from afar. I shall continue to learn and be enthralled by the power of storms and sinisterness of snakes, yet be frightened of them. But I will still draw, paint, sculpt, read and write about such things we have yet to understand. perhaps that eight-legged one was more frightened of me, especially due to my assault with an issue with the black wings of cthulhu. As I sit here eating leftover pizza and drinking coffee, I secretly hope to see this being who hides in the darkest corners of my room and my rational mind. or am I merely cautious of its return should it remember my wrongdoings, after all it is only an animal. but again, who am I to have opinion on any of the things we mortals fear to even mention at thought of losing our sanity, if such exaggeration is allowed.
and now I leave you with words to wonder by:
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places.
