Description
"I own Metropolis. My technology built it, my will keeps it going, and nearly two-thirds of its people work for me whether they know it or not. It's a model of efficiency, I'll admit. And yet, I've often thought...why limit myself to just one city?"Born in the Suicide Slums of Metropolis and to one of the oldest families in the city, Lex Luthor was possessed of ambition and self-determination since he was old enough to walk. This ambition and drive, though, led to him being lured by another more intoxicating desire: pure greed. Lex wanted wealth, power, fame and everyone fawning over him. This was what led him to found LexCorp in the late 1980s. As a young, albeit bald titan of industry, he cornered the market through smart business practices such as edging out the competition and lobbying the government. He even made generous donations to Metropolis' police force as well, keeping the city's streets safe from unorganized crime, and his finances tax-free. Yet behind the façade, Lex craved power, keeping the image of a philanthropic industrialist while making backdoor dealings with terrorists and foreign leaders. By 1996, such illegal arms dealings with countries like Yugoslavia, earned him a new enemy: Superman.
Phew! I was able to get Lex in the gallery tonight! Following my Superman/Batman pic, I felt that it was a disgrace that Lex Luthor was not in the gallery after nearly 8 years of being active on this site. So, I decided to finally do him justice, given his status as Superman's arch-nemesis. Lex's drive to bring down Superman was what ultimately led to his discovery and reliance of Kryptonite - an act which helped him in the short term, but ultimately, with each encounter, Superman always found a way to overcome it. Despite his intelligent appearance, Lex has been known to make a few mistakes now and again. One such instance was when he hired the Joker and Harley Quinn to kill Superman for a billion dollars, only for Batman to follow the Clown Prince of Crime all the way from Gotham City. The other mistake was reaching out to the Coluan android, Brainiac, who would continue to play a role in Lex's life throughout the years. At one point, Luthor was even able to become President of the United States, only to be impeached after his true colors were revealed. He even went insane twice. The first was during the final hours of his presidency, when he began taking Venom - the same steroidal compound that Bane used - and synthetic liquid Kryptonite infusions. Thus, he was sent to Arkham Asylum for rehabilitation, and was deemed sane. The second bout of insanity occurred after he merged with Brainiac temporarily, and became obsessed with reconstituting him in order to attain godhood. Luthor has even taken credit for building half the buildings in Metropolis as well, as well as founded and led the first incarnation of the Injustice Gang, along with usurping Gorilla Grodd for control and leadership over the second incarnation of the Legion of Doom.
Disclaimer: Lex Luthor belongs to DC Comics, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
