The Shimada clan have a truly special ancestry. Long ago, during the Jomon Era, the Emperor Jimmu, a grandson of the dragon sea god, Ryujin, married the daughter of the storm god, Susanoo-No-Mikoto and his wife, Kushinadahime. As a result of this union, the Shimada clan's samurai were granted the power over the sea and the earth itself. By the Sengoku Period, alongside the Honda, Sato and Hattori clans, the Shimada clan became vassals of the mighty Tokugawa clan of Mikawa. During that time, they fought in the major battles of the Sengoku era, fought alongside men like Oda Nobunaga, Akechi Mitsuhide and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, all for the sake of their master: Tokugawa Ieyasu, the future shogun of Japan and founder of the Edo Period. Following WWII, emperor Hirohito agreed to the Potsdam Concessions, among which included the reinstatement of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and re-establishing some semblance of the old pre-Meiji Restoration society. Now, the emperor was once more a figurehead, with the Tokugawa Shoguns acting as de-facto rulers, but in a position similar to the President of the United States, in that they had all the powers of the Executive Branch, but had to be kept in check by the Diet and the Courts, as well as the daimyos, or feudal lords who were restored to their lands, and increasingly took up the practice of tenant farming, along with owning the zaibatsu coporations. Lastly, the samurai were reinstated as an extension of the police. As such, the Shimada clan were reinstated with the rest of them. As a result, the Shimada clan's eldest child, princess Miya, desired to follow in her ancestors' footsteps, and walk the path of a samurai in order to protect the innocent people of Japan, Taiwan and South Korea from being consumed by North Korea. While on a mission to Russia, she had an encounter with the Teen Titans and helped them on a mission in Siberia. Afterwards, she was granted a T-Communicator from Robin, and joined the Titans as an honorary member.

So, the helmet that Tsunami is wearing is actually known as 変わり兜, or "strange helmet" in Japanese. These helmets were in use from the latter half of the Sengoku Jidai right up through the Edo Period. These helmets date from the 16th to the 19th century, and at this period in Japanese history, this armor was more of an artistic representation. The armor that these helmets were a part of were fully functional, but the helmets tend to be a way to display a samurai's social status, success, wealth, fame and the skill of the artist. These helmets were sometimes worn on the battlefield, but generally speaking they were meant for artistic display. She The fish displayed on it is known as a shachihoko (鯱): an animal in Japanese mythology which is said to have the head of a tiger and the body of a carp. It is believed that this animal is responsible for rainfall, and for centuries in Medieval Japan, temples and castles were decorated with shibi, or roof ornaments in the shape of a shachihoko, so as to protect them from fires.

Now, on Tsunami's cuirass, that symbol of the crab with the leaves is actually the family crest of the Shimada clan. I had to type in Japanese in order to find it. As for her clan's history, that was something I partially came up with on my own, namely because it was so hard to find information on the Shimada clan, so much so that at one point, I was tempted to change her clan name to Shimazu, since the Shimazu clan are more renowned in Japanese history, and there are more records written about them from the Sengoku Era, but I stuck true to the character's family backstory. The cause for her metahuman powers being related to the Japanese Shinto gods of the sea made total sense, as the emperors of Japan claim descent from Ryujin, the dragon god of the sea. (fun fact, Ryujin was actually given credit for creating the kamikaze that destroyed the Mongol invasion fleet). She is on the same Titans roster with Fury, and is good friends with her, as well as the original Titans. Since Nightwing and Starfire know Japanese fluently, she has fun striking up conversations with them. At Titans Academy, she is one of the mentors, and is responsible for co-running the Japanese cultural clubs and language program alongside fellow samurai, Katana. Tsunami is also the mother of Mizuko Shimada, AKA Deep Blue, and loves spending time in Jump City's Japanese cultural centers, such as the Miyazaki and Shin Okazaki districts. In combat, Tsunami uses her sword similar to Poseidon's trident. When struck into the ground, she can create a variety of earthquakes, ranging from minor tremors, to devastating landslides capable of causing volcanic eruptions and tidal waves. Yet she also can control the sea to her whim to save stranded castaways, or to even send a strong current to hamper North Korean ships from taking Japanese captives. Lastly, her blue eyes are a reminder of her family's divine heritage, and links to the Shinto gods of the sea.
