Description
This is a suit of archaic Mk. I "Thunder" power armor. It is the direct ancestor of every suit of powered armor in use in the Imperium today. Mk. I armor was developed by the Emperor, on Terra just before M30. He equipped his armies of genetically enhanced warriors with it. These warriors were not true Space Marines, although they were genetically altered. These men were actually techno-barbarians, warriors of the various tribes whose constant warfare had left Earth a blasted wasteland. Only the top part of the Mk. I is actually powered, augmenting the wearer's upper body strength. This was an advantage on the first battlefields of the Great Crusade, as many engagements were won by hand to hand combat rather than ranged. The lower armor plates are not powered. The Mk. I is not fully enclosed, which means it is not true Space Marine armor - it cannot support its wearer in a vacuum. The second iteration of Marine armor, the Mk. II "Crusade" armor was fully enclosed, and equipped with many of the systems that modern Marines might take for granted.So yeah, in case you haven't heard, I'm getting into pre-heresy Warhammer 40,000. My next tournament army is going to be a pre-heresy Emperor's Children army. This guy was tons of fun to make. It seems like every time I unleash my full ability on a model, it's an infinite improvement over the last one. It's like the longer I keep myself in check the more able I am when I let loose - I had no idea I could sculpt putty like this, and everything that's green is putty. The picture in the middle was my only reference, as I don't own any of Games Workshop's old Marine models. The back was a sheer guess, but I think it works.

This is amazing!!! I always love seeing MkI armor and Thunder Warriors in general. I've been contemplating making a few models, not to play just to make, since GW and FW don't seem to be putting out new MkI armor anytime soon.

A Mk II suit, with the fixed helmet, would be pretty cool to see, also.

This is awesome. I love Mk I power armor so much, and there is so little stuff out there ;~;
I have literally never seen any illustration of Thunder Warriors.

In the Macharian Crusade, were there only Guardsmen involved? And if so, did they wear this MK I Power Armour?
Is it outrageous for me to ask at any job interview if the interviewer has any knowledge of the Warhammer 40k concept and if not, to just leave the examining room?

Yes, that is outrageous. To answer your question, Space Marines were also probably involved in the Macharian conquests, and would have worn Mk. VI and VII suits. Guardsmen are never issued power armor.

This will do the job, then. Keep in mind that early power armor suits were only powered in the torso and arms, the legs were just normal plate or even chain mail. Suits used in the Unification Wars on Earth specifically were powered in these places to augment a warrior's capability in hand to hand combat, whereas modern power armor is powered in all extremities to further enhance the wearer's speed, strength, and resistance to damage.

Maybe, after I get rolling on pre-heresy. Maybe I'll do a veteran squad with Mk. I and II armor.

Heh, I better clear up a few things for you. Yeah, that's Ork hair. The model in the middle is not mine, it's just a reference picture I used when I made my model. The older Space Marine models, such as the Mk. I, II, III, and IV might be hard to find. You can still buy them from Games Workshop, but they're expensive.
