Description
The first annual SteamCon is next month. Some friends and I are gear..er..ramping up with some olde tyme costumes. Our basement is beginning to resemble a steampunk factory/junkyard.Here is a potential direction I might take. Going for a Rocketeer/Buck Rogers look. Everything will be thrift stored and/or hand crafted.
Foreseeable obstacles:
-I'm 6'6", finding a cheap leather jacket that fits and is also a proper color AND finding another one of the same color to cut up to make the buttoned chest part...might be difficult.
-Said jacket will must likely become uncomfortable after any length of time indoors.
-Too much stuff to build with not enough free time (~3 weeks!). Keep it simple, stupid!

Do those clothes have a name? The button ones like rivets?
Nice work.

Yep, you caught me! I drew the front then copy/flipped and modified it for the back. Did the same thing for my Cover Girl GI Joe concept.
I think I'll gradually build more accessories for this character. Haven't decided on a name yet or his back story.

I know what you mean about the K.I.S.S. rule in designing and building a costume.
BTW, either way, as a drawing in and of itself, this image is still really good!

Thanks! Yeah, of the design above I only completed the ray gun, gaiters/boots and a variation of the holster. The rest of the suit I improvised with thrift store clothing resembling that era. I should have a shot of the ray gun up in the next few days.
Nice job on your Ray Beethoven costume. I saw you waking around the Con on Saturday. A friend took some shots of you in your Evil Ray costume. You've created some pretty neat gear!

Thanks! Yeah, that convention definitely was worth the trip for me, even though a couple of my props DID break at the last minute before I could show 'em around. Oh, well.
I was genuinely flattered every single time somebody took a photo of my Regular Ray and Evil Ray costumes, and it was all the more gratifying because I knew that some of the cooler bells and whistles had to remain behind in my room. (Evil Ray's Vickers machine gun with a cursed tiki statue in place of the barrel, for example.)
BTW, out of curiosity, did you create both side of this entire drawing freehand? Did you flip the image and then fill in different details into the second image's outline? I am still impressed at how close to a perfect mirror image your concept drawing really got!

Slick design. Those gaiters are hot. Good luck getting it finished!

Thanks! I may swap out the jacket/jetpack for a mechanical arm. Rev 2 is in the works!

That sounds like a sweet idea, too.
