Description
"an account of the unbelievable events which occured on june 24, 1885 en route to investigate the hot springs at banff, northwest territory, as recollected by mr. j.m. gordon, dominion lands agent at calgary, and passenger on the cpr, who was sent to investigate the celebrated springs."on nov. 25, 1885 order in council no. 2197 received royal ascent from the queen's privy council for canada reserving the hot springs near the canadian pacific railway station at banff, northwest territory and the surrounding 26 km as public lands. that area was expanded two years later with the rocky mountains park act, 1887, quickly becomming a popular destination for wealthy victorians.
in an effort not to discourage tourists the events of this day have been hidden by the canadian pacific railway and the dominion government for over 110 years. recent scholarship has uncovered the frightening realities of opening the rocky mountains for passage.
