Description So don't try to stop me,
Don't try to stop me cause nobody can.
I've got a dream, a beautiful dream, and that makes me a man.

No don't try to stop me,
Don't try to stop me cause nobody can.
I've got a dream, a beautiful dream, and that makes me...
makes me a man.

When I saw the movie Emperor of the North(Pole), I knew I'd have to draw something from it. This picture is roughly inspired by several of the opening scenes: The ruthless conductor Shack is guarding his train, the 19, from hobos as it pulls off a siding; "King of Hobos" A No. 1 plans to jump it anyway.

You know, I just fucking realized the polar express hobo dude was paying homage to this movie.

Time for a nostalgia trip. Both for the film, and for your art. This rolled up over in the "More from DA" box, and I just had a gasp of "Oh god...the memories." XD

Still, what a great nod to the film. The atmosphere, pose, colors...one could just feel the cool summer breeze, and smell the coal smoke in the air.

I'm glad you still like it. ^^ It was an atmospheric movie with a lot of... er, charm.  Looking back at this drawing, I clearly had a better grasp of locomotive proportions than human proportions.  Gad, the size of Shack's head.

Have you seen some of my earlier drawings? Proportions are a learned thing. They do not come naturally! XD

Shack wasn't a ruthless conductor nor like any other bad guy. For me, I saw him as a quick-tempered rebellion who has a notorious hate for hoboes.
A-no.1 on the other hand wasn't really a legend to all ordinary people but nevertheless the most clever hobo from the north.

If beating people to death with a hammer isn't ruthless, I don't know what is. D:

Hmm, looks cool, man.

(Funny, because of the forest setting in Oregon, down to the pine trees, is it me or does it reminds me of some Disney XD show "Gravity Falls"? Just saying.)

Marvelous!!!
If you can do this, I really don't know what you could do with "Runaway Train", the 1985 movie; have you seen it?

Atticus-W In reply to history-nerd [2013-03-13 19:47:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I have seen Runaway Train, but it's not a favorite. Besides, drawing a bunch of diesels isn't very fun.

Can't argue with the Diesels there, although I found the movie quite powerful. But as you like it, art is free!

Best railroad film ever made. I have it on DVD and watch it constantly. I even learned how to play some of the music on piano~ ^^

This is a very well done piece I must say~ I love the style of artwork you have too~ Nice job on the #19 as well.

RIP Ernest Borgnine "Shack"

Yes... it's truly one of the best, if not the best. And I love the music, too. I'm jealous of your talents already.

Thanks so much for the kind words... and RIP Ernest Borgnine indeed. He died while I was away from dA (indeed, I just found your comment now ) and I never got a chance to give that man the dA tribute that he deserved. He was marvelous as Shack and was an all-around cool guy as far as I could tell...

Unfortunately, the #19 is being moved to her new home in Elgin Oregon. I was quite upset because I waited too long to work with her

Last I heard, Court Hammond (the guy who bought up the Yreka Western) had serious legal troubles and was incapable of fulfilling his contract with the Wallowa Union Railroad. Wallowa County dropped their contract with Hammond sometime last year, as he failed to even operate the WURA with their equipment (several Geeps and RDCs) for a substantial part of the tourist season.

Plus, due to debt Hammond has accrued, #19 can't be moved off YW property, and from what I've read on Altamont Press, YW also had maintenance issues with their shops recently. Can't fix a steam engine up when ya don't have electricity to power all the lights 'n machinery!

You know, #19 has retuerned to service on the Yureka western! Thats right, you can 'ride" shacks train now ithout the fear of well....dieing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atticus-W In reply to Railwolf [2008-04-15 03:25:25 +0000 UTC]

Well put.

Anyway, yeah I know! I was honestly amazed almost beyond belief to learn that the 19 still existed, let alone in service. I remember seeing it in a tiny black and white ad in Trains magazine a couple years back and saying, "Hey! It's the train from Emperor of the North!!" Considering the eventual fate of the OP&E right of way, and the rather indifferent opinions of many "preservationists" regarding short line steam at the time, it wouldn't have been too hard for one more steamer to "slip through the cracks" that late in the game...

They still have "A#1 to portland on the 19" written on the water tower at the Yureka western! Look for it as the train depats.
