Description
A strange question have I-For as poets must poetry have I read
By great names of men long dead
And a theme has caught mine eye
These poets beseech their ladies plant a seed
Of pity first, then love they ask
Though it seems to me those who want no pity's task
Are those of love most in need
Perhaps it is true
All poets are liars
And of women's hearts, triers
With eyes bright and cheeks a ruddy hue
What it is I cannot quite say-
Does love spring from pity or
Is it sympathy's door
Misnamed by a poet's love-of-the-day?
