Description
Perhaps many of these don't necessarily qualify as sketches, but this is just an assortment of miscellaneous art from within the past year that probably doesn't merit being posted individually.I mentioned once in my journal how my sister decided she might as well get married the same weekend as her graduation since a good deal of the people close to her were going to be there anyway, and how she commissioned me to do drawings that represented each attendee in some way. And how I never finished the assignment in time.
So, if you're one of the people waiting for a commission from me, you're in good company; 'cause I couldn't even work up enough steam to finish the artwork for my own sister's big weekend. I don't think it mattered much in the end; I suspect the main reason she commissioned me in the first place was just to give me something to do.
Part of the reason I had trouble completing the assignment, aside from just feeling burned out and privately viewing the entire thing as pointless, was that many of her ideas were either too vague or didn't make a lot of sense. For instance, I didn't especially like the notion of drawing her as the Doctor from Doctor Who. Getting a doctorate in English literature, while impressive, doesn't really have anything to do with the character
So, yeah, that's her at the top, alongside her significant other, whom I drew as a wizard. And below them are most of the other pics depicting or symbolizing various friends and relations that I managed to complete before I gave up. Van Helsing is the friend of theirs who performed the wedding ceremony in a book store (he did a really great job, btw).
Below those are some cards I made for people. The drawing of the Gill Man from The Creature From the Black Lagoon was for my uncle's birthday. I don't know if he's ever seen the movie; I just happen to like it. I've seen it a bunch of times on TV and in 3D in the theater once or twice.
My grandmother called me up and suggested I do a drawing of a conductor for my dad's bday because he's in this chorus, and I was like, "Yeah, whatever, Grandma," but I couldn't think of any better ideas in the end.
Below that are two cards I made for my sister. One was a thank you note for my birthday. She'd sent me three things from my Amazon Wishlist: Megamind, a book of Juan Ortiz Star Trek poster art and the fifth season of The Venture Bros.
The drawing of her and her husband as Ponies is an inside joke. I told her how our dad's gf had given me a Snoopy night light for Christmas (okay, it was a Christmas Snoopy night light, so I guess it's sort of a decoration and not necessarily because she thinks I'm afraid of the dark) and since we were comparing stories of baffling presents, my sister told me how, a few years ago, our dad had gotten her these knockoff My Little Pony toys, I guess because she used to have some My Little Ponies when she was a little girl and he thought they'd be nostalgic for her. As far as I know, she's never even seen the new show. I hadn't ever watched more than a minute or two of it until very recently. As you can see, even though I hadn't thought much of drawing her as the Doctor before, I recycled that idea for the Pony drawing.
Underneath those, alongside a doodle of my not-so OC Oliver Mouse, is a sketch for a book cover I was working on until the author who had commissioned me told me the deal was off because he'd gotten someone else to do his cover for free. To add insult to injury, he was pretty dismissive of the work I'd done up to that point when I showed it to him just because I stupidly thought he might be curious. Okay, there's not a lot there on which to base an opinion and maybe it didn't match his vision, but I'd wasted a few hours looking up reference photos and sketching; it wouldn't have killed him to be a bit more polite about it considering that I'm nice enough to pretend I'm interested in every new plot wrinkle he comes up with for his outlandish sci-fi/fantasy epics, which is pretty much all he talks about.
Next is an alternate drawing I did for ImfamousE 's sexy aerobics art jam It's an okay drawing; I just like the second one I did better.
Finally, at the very bottom are a couple sketches I did while hanging out at the park while waiting for my car to be fixed on an unseasonably warm late October day.

Oliver on guitar is cute (always love seeing more of him), but my favorites are actually the sketches of the park, can't say why but I just really like them.

Aw, thanks. I kinda assumed most people would find those the least interesting for some reason.

Thanks. It was just a rushed doodle, but people seem to like it.

Maybe as Oliver is playing the guitar, Marlene would randomly show up and ask if he was writing a love song for her.

Yep! I even used an 80s workout video to reference the pose.

A fun collection. One thing I like about you is your eclectic interest in pop art. Gill Man, Doctor Who, The Venture Bros., you never know who's going to show up in your little brain!
I don't know why people are so mean and inconsiderate. That kinda stuff is demoralizing. Sometimes I think Spaceship Earth is just plain doomed.
It's interesting to see Oliver in a "normal" situation. You have to show contrast in order to fully appreciate the stress he goes in his little adventures with his auntie.
Thanks for sharing!

Little brain is right. Thanks for commenting, as usual.
That Oliver doodle was from a thank you note I sent to my grandmother; besides being a cute character to use and feeling like it would be nice to draw him in a less dire situation for once, it appealed to my irreverent streak to draw a character whose origin, if she were aware of it, she'd find completely shocking, to put it mildly. I felt slightly guilty when she called me up just to tell me how much she liked the drawing of the little girl, particularly since it only took me like a minute to sketch it out.
You know, I'm pretty sure that writer wasn't aware he was hurting my feelings; he's an okay guy; just a bore and kinda self-absorbed (cripes, I hope he doesn't read this).

If you just add "... bless his heart" whenever you make comments like that you can get away with just about anything.
Like, "Daphnesecretgarden drives me crazy sometimes, bless his heart ...."

Thank you! I can't help feeling like I should maybe be trying to do more stuff like that.
