We all know why Homer is a gorilla, enough said.

Marge is a cat, because one of the Treehouse of Horror specials had her as a panther.

Bart is a frog, because in the episode, "Bart vs. Australia", he had a frog named Bart Jr.

Lisa is a dog, because she had a puppy counterpart in the episode, "Love, Springfieldian Style".

Maggie is a cub, because a bear had her pacifier and she stayed with a family of bears in the episode, "The Call of The Simpsons".

Ralph is a cat, because he once said, "my cat's breath smells like cat food."

Barney is a squirrel, because there is an alcoholic squirrel named Conker who appears in a video game, titled, "Conker's Bad Fur Day".
