Description
It's taken some time but I'm hoping this shows some improvement on my previous work.I'm a long way of the level of realism I hope to one day reach.
All credit for the pose has to go to Lev Dolgachov the photographer who's photo I used as a reference.
A3 Smooth Bristol
5H-2B Faber Castell 9000 pencils
Blending stump
Derwent pencil eraser
Lots of frustration.
Any one found using my work without my permission will be forced to listen to the Barney song on a continuous loop for a full week. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Honest critiques welcome as I'm self taught and need to know what I could do better.
I'm entering this into the Improve Yourself Challenge at
I'm using this both to encourage me to start drawing again, to develop my level of realism, improve my rendering of hair and tackle at least one new texture such as fabric.

I think you did a wonderful job with the hand and feet, which i personally feel are some of the hardest thing to draw. and I just have to comment on the hair again. One word, AWESOME!

Again, thank you for such a kind comment. I must say, it wasn't until I came to draw the hands that I realised how much detail there actually is in hands and the fact the fingers are so small on my drawing made it a nightmare, the foot was much easier. I've been given a few pointers on the hair, so there is obviously room for improvement there but that's what makes it fun.

Holy woah. This is spectacular. You're self-taught? Really, it's gorgeous. I love her hands the most; the way the highlights get more intense is really cool.

I dont think you could improve on this piece of work......this is as realistic as you can get....
Your shading and blending are excellent.
I too thought it was a photograph.
You should be really proud of this acheivement, i know i would be if i drew to this standard.
Excellent

Well a few people have pointed out I could have done better with the hair, and I myself know it's far from perfect, but yes this is the only piece I've done so far that I am proud of and hope I can make each new one just that little bit better. Thank you very much for your comment it helps to know that all that hard work can bring pleasure to others.

That's pencil?! Wow! I thought it had somehow gotten mis-categorized from photography... It's definitely well on the way to realism. I'm very impressed.

The only giveaway is the hair. I'd recommend using a technical pencil for the fine lines. I first used this on the Diane Kruger picture. Her left side of her hair was done using a technical pencil but her right side using a normal graphite pencil (i think her left was better). It takes longer but the effects are worth it.

Thank you for the tip, there are lots of areas I need to improve on and any advice is gratefully received. I presume by technical pencils you mean mechanical ones? If so I do have a couple and will dust them off and start to practice.

Yes - I meant mechanical pencil. It seems the very best on dA use them for the detailed stuff.
