Description
It's taken some time but I'm hoping this shows some improvement on my previous work.I'm a long way of the level of realism I hope to one day reach.
All credit for the pose has to go to Lev Dolgachov the photographer who's photo I used as a reference.
A3 Smooth Bristol
5H-2B Faber Castell 9000 pencils
Blending stump
Derwent pencil eraser
Lots of frustration.
Any one found using my work without my permission will be forced to listen to the Barney song on a continuous loop for a full week. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Honest critiques welcome as I'm self taught and need to know what I could do better.
I'm entering this into the Improve Yourself Challenge at
I'm using this both to encourage me to start drawing again, to develop my level of realism, improve my rendering of hair and tackle at least one new texture such as fabric.

This looks photographic: you say are trying to improve upon realism, but i think you're there already!
Your attention to shading and use of tones is what really makes this piece; it describes the shapes of the body well, and where they are in accordance to each other the hair is also amazing!
keep up the great work

Thank you so much, this is a big improvement on my other work but being new to drawing I know I still have a lot to learn and I hope gradually my work will show that. I'm so shocked and grateful at the response I've had to this, and really appreciate those like you who take the time to express themselves. Once again, thank you.

Wow!
I really thought this was a photografh.. The one thing I can say is besides that.. was is it with her right upper arm? It seems a bit skinny? Or maybe it's just me.. (No offense at all, just asking)
But anyway, it's really amazing!!! I would wish it was me, who was able to draw like this

Rockinfroggi In reply to nippe011 [2011-05-20 22:35:36 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for taking the time to comment, and no offence taken. It does look a little like you say but as most on here will tell you, scanners don't very often do a great job. The top edges of here arms are very light and almost white in places due to the highlights the lighting created.
But that was very observant of you and shows you have an eye for detail. Thank you for your kind words and keep drawing and you will could be better than me in no time.

aah, I see. Scanners are some nasty beastes
And thanks for the kind words, but I think it's gonna take a lot of time to be better than you, if it's anyhow possible for me, hehe

Thank you very much. I notice you are far braver than me, I'm a long way off committing to colour but hope to get there some day.
You have a lot of impressive work of your own.

Thanks for the kind review of my work. As for the color, I went with pastels since I was more familiar with "drawing".
Just give something new a try one day and see what happens.
