Description It's taken some time but I'm hoping this shows some improvement on my previous work.
I'm a long way of the level of realism I hope to one day reach.

All credit for the pose has to go to Lev Dolgachov the photographer who's photo I used as a reference.

A3 Smooth Bristol
5H-2B Faber Castell 9000 pencils
Blending stump
Derwent pencil eraser
Lots of frustration.

Any one found using my work without my permission will be forced to listen to the Barney song on a continuous loop for a full week. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Honest critiques welcome as I'm self taught and need to know what I could do better.


I'm entering this into the Improve Yourself Challenge at

I'm using this both to encourage me to start drawing again, to develop my level of realism, improve my rendering of hair and tackle at least one new texture such as fabric.

I am ashamed I've not seen this before and also a big angry at myself too, I could have been ogling it before now!!!

So beautiful and so well drawn, i wouldnt change a thing about her hair either, its perfect!!

Thank you I'm glad you like it, it honestly is the only drawing I'm a little proud of only because I feel it was quite a big jump from my previous stuff.

This is really fantastic, at first I thought it was a photograph and then I read what you had used The only part that very slightly shows it's true colours is the hand on the right hand side, you can tell here just a little, that it is a pencil drawing....other than that, my golly gosh....simply amazing!!

I accidentally deleted this from my inbox and had to hurry back to Self Taught Artists, it was so realistic that I thought it was an actual photograph and didn't see it in traditional at first! You've done amazingly here!

amazing skin tones, and soft shadow pushing your anatomy knowledge forward the only thing that i think you could improve is hair some really small detail i'm not saying i could do better just want o comment something usefull

I appreciate your comment and fully agree that the hair is far from perfect. I'm still pretty new to drawing so hopefully with time I'll be able to improve my technique and eye for detail.

I'm not sure I'd call it amazing skill just yet, more a mixture of beginners luck and a beautiful photo reference that forced me to try harder than I had before.

I'm no professional, but I know great work when I see it having looked at tons of traditional art. I really can't find anything to critique about this. Your tones are wonderful, your proportion is spot on, the hair looks a little "sticky", but that's nothing too major as her hair could've been greasy when she had the photo taken. Just amazing work. Kudos to you and the photographer who gave you this inspiration.

I can see what you mean about the hair but give or take a strand or two that's pretty much as it looks in the photo.
Definitely kudos to the photographer as I fell in love with the pose the moment I saw it, and I think the determination to do it justice has improved my technique substantially.
