This is probably my last finished movie of this year, so let's go out with a bang that will give you quite a headache.
Another hyper Sonic movie, for everyone who complained that I lost my crappy drawingstyle and got bored with all the more artsy things I've done.
Oh, and to finally shut people up about telling me the Babylon Rogues are back. I KNOW, darn it.
So yeah, Zero Gravity, what's there to say?
Thing that amuses me the most is that all the levels are racetracks that go in a loop.
That was fine for the first game, since it revolved around a grand prix, but in this game our heroes race because they need to go somewhere, are being chased, or are doing the chasing. So why the heck are the racing in circles?
Would make more sense if the levels were long stretches of road, like in most Rally games or in the Cruis'n series.
What's with the Raiders of the lost Ark vibes in the babylon Rogues story opening anway, Storm's even making the same arm movements as Indy's "sidekick".
For the rest, the game has a generic Sonic story, so let's go around the bulletpoints:
---Annoying new main character: Suprisingly no, but the Babylon Rogues return. Wave and Storm became a lot more likeble in this game, but Jet is really annoying here, getting right on my most annoying characters list after SIlver and Chris.
He yells at Storm and Wave for being late at one point, after they seperated to do chores. Things Wave did:
Research ancient civilisation, improve the airboards, invent a brand new radar system.
Things Storm did: Fight Amy, being attacked by robots, getting lost in the city, finding 2 cosmos stones and getting back to a flying headquarters with no aircraft.
Things Jet did:... moan and complain behind his desk.
Why's that guy the leader anyway?
I love one bit of dialogue that went like;
Jet: Give me THAT THING girl!
Sonic: Girls don't cooperate when you rush them Jet!
Jet: Rush?? IM THE FASTEST CREATURE ALIVE AND IM FAST AND AWESOME AND FAST (insert 5 hour lecture about how fast he is)
Great Jet, but that wasn't Sonic's point. But that bit sums him up pretty much. Heck, it sums up all Sonic characters now I think about it.
---New super evil villain.
Jup, move over Ultimate Doom, Erazor Djin and Mephiles, because here is..dun dun dun! SCR-HD! It's a robot! He wants to steal a ring, and then.. explodes.
Then he steals the rings again..and then he explodes again.
Wow, I guess he's modeled after Sauron from Lord of the rings or something.
Exposition plot: As usual, the game doesn't have any real plot, other then characters yelling how awesome they are and then moving to a diffrent place. Occasionally that plot get's interupted by tedious exposition.
I love it how Tails at one point goes "The robots exploded.. BUT THAT MEANS!..no wait, I have to think first.." As if the writers want to build up suspense about the exposition.
Oh, why did the robots explode, Tails? Because of the power of the chaos emeralds? or the power of the Ark? or the power of the cosmos stones? Or the power of this paperclip? Tell me!! The suspense is killing me!!
The back story is about aliens crashing on earth, because their ship crashed because they send it into space to cause a black hole to destroy earth as a warning for not using the spaceship who's in space about to kill them.. or something.
Makes sense.
--Most conflict in the story is caused by the heroes's speech impediments;
Jup, as usual your biggest enemies are your friends, because they keep fighting because..eh.. I dunno.
If I were Eggman, I'd just start a pie eating contest for Sonic and his "friends" and make them murder each other over who's the best eater, while I go somewhere else carrying out my evil plans.
Speaking of which, what the heck does Eggman want anyway? Build Robotnikland? The guy has at least two entire new themepark/city/factory whatever's in every game, why does he even need a evil plan to get Roobtnikland? He seems to have his own evil cities and all already, especially since GUN and Sonic never seem to bother demolishing those. They just stop Eggman's useless moonlaser weapon, or in Tails case, take away 300 rings, and then go away again. Morons.

Te best way to end the year, plus It's a refresh after seeing the werehog parody.lol
All those points and what you showed was pretty much the reason why I never even bothered to pick that game up. Jet has no manners it seems and is a complete idiot about everything. Good to know you make him sound better than hearing Jason Griffith's rendition.

Knuckles: we're udner attack by Robots!
Sonic: YEAH!!!
Eggman: a black hole is sucking us all in!
Tails: YEAH!!
Wave: Jet, I'm pregnant and our baby has cancer..
Jet: YEAH! IM FASTER!

Now that Jet has been promoted from pointless character with no personality to pointless character with personal issues, it is no wonder that you placed him in your chamber of "worst Sonic characters ever created". Too bad for him that this will make you hate him more with every game he appears in from now on!
Ahhhh....Now that all the people who kept reminding you about Babylon Rogues new appearance have succeded in "persuading" you to make a sequel, prepare to receive a gratitude in a form of..........even more reminding about games-you-have-not-made-fun-of!
Anyway, gameplay itself looks like a lot of fun, though storyline that has almost nothing to do with racing is resolved by......racing? Not to mention how much helpful is competing against each other while world's fate is at stake (or maybe not------there were no guests from future that was completely destroyed by this particular event....so how serious it really was? ). Also, got to love how Amy's role is pretty much as useless as in 'Sonic 2006'.
That movie was unexpected and fantastic new year gift and for that I'm extremely grateful...

All Sonic's friends roles are useless.
I dont think Knuckles had more then 3 lines of dialogue himself.
Well untill his 5 hour exposition speech when he needed to translate that stone.
The plots are more interested in mystical powers and ancient tribes and techniqal jibberjab theories then the actual characters.
Pretty much like Legend of Zelda plotlines, only with lot's more characters.

That always happens when it is required how generic 'entertainment' or hobby can be something that pushes the entire universe forward. Such concepts just CALL for the in-game history to be remastered in a way that involves poke' ball being invented earlier than stone tools so that we may have, instead of two-player roman coloseum, mystic cult that is eternal in traditions! Only this time we have more knowledge about characters than in case of Ash or Yugi (whose personalities were sooo neglected for the benefit of making up world rotating around running into people, challenging them to endless fights ), that is, due to earlier installments.
As for Knuckles as an excuse for explaining part of the plot, I guess it would be better for Sonic team people to keep him in that "Waaah! I'm confused!" attitude consequently. Heck, the guy is being slowly pushed out of his role-----as far as I remember Espio's storyline from Rivlas2, it was Knuckles himself who got to be attacked just because he said one statement! O_o

oh yeah, Espio's an insane psychopatic lnatic in that game too.
All Sonic characters are walking timebombs, it baffles me how those psycho's can even form friendships or teams to begin with.

Team formation is a trivial task when we are equipped with the infinite power of nonsensical storytelling and script writing.
While normal people make a team with the aim to have it function well with the respect of all team members, I guess that Sonic and co. struggles to use every possible and impossible way of forming operation/relationship group EXCEPT that 'normal' one. Let's see what we have so far....
A)- all the teams that just...are, no matter how many internal conflicts tear these apart..
B)- all the teams that came to be just because all the people with at least one common feature in their motives have coincidencially met in the same place (doesn't 'team dark' fall into this bracket? )
and finally the last one I recall,
C)-Ah yes, all these teams that jump into existance on the fairy-tale principle of:"I'm a guy from the village that got eaten by a giant and in order to reverse this, I'm collecting all the pebbles from the road! :: Cool! Can I join your cause even though I shouldn't care less? :: Sure!!! ". I recall such thing within "Sonic 2006" in a form of Amy Rose being allowed by Silver to tag along (even though she ruined his first attempt to kill Sonic), only to make her ruin his efforts for the second time. But hey! She was useful after all----she went through entire level in order to open huge door for Silver......Oh wait... only to watch him open exact same doors that were like...10 meters away...

Rogerregorroger In reply to TheGreatMC [2008-12-31 20:52:32 +0000 UTC]
I suppose Silver wanted Amy around as a guide.
If I were in a diffrent dimension I'd like a habitant as friend to. And that she ended up being useless, well she IS a Sonic side kick character after all.
It's funny how characters with the same general motivation always get together.
How funny would it be if it wasn't Rouge but Cream who run itno the room with psycho Omega and Shadow.

Hmmm.. Well, it would make sense for him in terms of sole plot of the game to do that, but.....given how he behaves would you really expect him to figure this out? I mean, come on! With all the respect for him as a character, well....how to put this? Ah, right.. usually time travellers are noble egomaniacs that already know totally and utterly everything. Those not falling into this bracket somehow use their otherwordly talents and contraptions to blend into society and move around unnoticed while performing their mission. Meanwhile, our Silver is pretty much the only time traveller that behaves like a child that got to be non-stop locked up in one small room till it's 15 birthday, at which point being told to suddenly go out, travel to other town and perform some administrative paperwork there. Okay, pretty much most of Sonic characters have the tendency to jump into action without a single thought, yet this guy lifts their small personality disorder up to its ultimate incarnation! No other character wastes as much energy on the worst available way to solve a problem. In second Rivals game it is Shadow who renders Eggman Nega's plan useless by one easy step, all while Silver struggles to solve the Ifrit problem by stealing Chao and cheerfully accepts Espio's help that brings no relief at all. Just how does whole thing sound: "Why, we have fiery demon that is still vulnerable at the time of game, evil lunatic that carries out his plan, and all the chao that are required for demon to be invincible. My, oh my....what shall we do to solve this predicament? I know! When a badguy breeds a murderous canary, let's defeat him by stealing all the bird food worldwide, hoping he has not bought enough already! YEAH!!!"
And people despise him for cheaply dominating the plot. Even though in both Sonic2006 and Rivals2 it is Shadow who does the most spectacular stuff---like beating the crap out of whole gigantic army of Mephiles clones, each being more powerful than our angsty hero himself.....
Cream together with Shadow and E-123? Wow, we would have 2 characters longing for revenge on Eggman plus one wanting to uncover his past. Since there would be significant agreement on what to do, Robotnik would have to go through the stuff we got to see like....three times in alternate endings to StH....

Well, most people who travel back in time have a library and computers and universeties or a commander who gives them the information they need, while Silver and Blaze were stuck in a wasteland, so I can forgive them for not achieving enough information to blend in.
On second thoughts, even IF Silver had Libraries and such to his disposal, he wouldn't use it anyway, as you said, SOnic characters are stupid.
Just yesterday I was facepalming my way trough Sonic Unleashed stupid clichΓ© plot, where they have a professor with Manuscripts that predict everything that will happen (and why yes, Sonic is the CHOSEN ONE, how did you guess?)
Any extremely smart and super inteligent person such as the two of us, or anyone who finished gradeschool, would immediatly study the entire manuscript so they know what to expect, but not Sonic and his friends, who use the manuscript only to have a "oh, that's just what the manuscript foretold us, how mystical and deep and exciting!" conversation after everything that happens, and then rush off mindlessly to the next adventure.
Reminds me, how many monsters are sealed away on earth with Sonic as the chosen one to defeat them already? Solaris, Ifrit, Erazor Djinn, Perfect Chaos, Babylon Guarden, the Babylon spaceship, and now Dark Gaya.
Ah, so that explains why God doesn't stop wars or answers prayers or anything, He's to busy making up random new monsters to be sealed away for Eggman to uncover and CHOSEN ONE Sonic to defeat them.
And more hilariously, Chip has Amnesia, merging 2 of the most hated characteristics together, a painfull comic relief and a whiny "what's my past??" emo guy, yay.
Beats me why Sonic calls him Chip, instead of the better suited name of "WellDUUUH" for his brilliant advice and tips like "Hey, see that thing? What is it? Why, it's a door! Maybe we can open it!"

I suppose that Chip at his chihuahua state is Sonic Team's latest fashion in terms of tutorial/helper companions that adds to their selection of such weapons of mass destruction which include:
1) manual-our dust collecting game advisor. Pretty much every game has this thinner or thicker booklet that most players don't even bother to read, unless it's too late. Most people just figure out by themselves how the game works, yet throwing seemingly useless set of paper sometimes proves to be disaster.
2) Fearsome tutorial character! How many enjoyable hours people spend with omniscient characters like Omochao? Ahhh, pure joy, especially when gameplay tips are written in the way that presumes utter absence of brain in player's head
3) Self-mentoring program. Being able to ditch tutorial smartass? Fear no more! This time it will be your character that will give advice to himself! And it sure comes necessary when you get to play as a hedgehog with a speed of squashed snail that fights his enemies by throwing stuff at them. Now our hero can stand idle in front of the object and mutter "this asphalt road looks fragile. I can break it with my psychokinesis and throw it at my enemies!", making himself endlessly stupid in the process and thus encouraging game designers to make this into his personality FOREVER!
4) And finally, a helpful sidekick that grants you advice evry time you don't want and is your permanent in-game companion because it turns out that plot of the game revolves around him!
Though I prefer waaaaay more Chip as an important element of whole story rather than our princess of Soleanna who is nothing more than:
-standard female OC that is quite often seen in fanfiction that involves making out with fave character
-aim at rabid Sonic fangirls to be finally included in the franchise plans
-latest evil plot of Chris Thorndyke who wants to yet again replace Amy as Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend, only this time taking failed sex-change operation!
Honestly, with her domination of the plot, whole "Silver rushes off to past to kill Sonic, only because mouthless Shadow showed him glowy rock with target's image on it" doesn't seem so bad by comparison---even if it is stupid.
Well, Sonic holding again the role of 'chosen one' IS annoying after recurrying a couple of times already, but keep in mind that in all RPG games "the chosen one foreseen by a shaman of a tribe-never-mentioned-before" is basically (judging by the background history of a character) the biggest moron in the entire region, insane enough to throw himself into daring action with no connection with the lore whtsoever. Judge by yourself whether, given this definition, Sonic is worthy of such honour...
Abundance of all these random arch-nemesis is disturbing, especially given the fact that SEGA does not try to have a GROUP of recurrying villains. Sure, Nega has appeared in three games by now, but it is visible that he is on the brink of being smashed into nothingness, as his defeats seem to be predicaments of no escape but at the same time new game including his world magically brings him back. One main villain is not enough. How many of those we had in "The Tick" series? Bah, Felix the cat shorts of 1950+ had "only" two main archvillains and their two helpers, yet that was quite enough to have a show keep running for 250 episodes!
π: 0 β©: 1
Rogerregorroger In reply to TheGreatMC [2009-01-03 01:56:29 +0000 UTC]
Well, "chosen one" storylines appear in every tv show or rpg game, but usually only once. Sonic is THE CHOSEN ONE for something at least once every week.
Eggman Nega hardly counts as a villain, he's never established, has no motivation or place he came from, he's just...there...
We don't even know his relation to Eggman or why he desperatly needs to travel to the past first before he can start his evil plans.
You could say Gerald Robotnik is also some sort of recurring villain, he IS responsible for most events in Sonic adventure 2 and Shadow the hedgehog's game, plus is partly responsible for Emerl the gizoid, who causes trouble in Sonic Battle and Sonic advance 3.
π: 0 β©: 1
TheGreatMC In reply to Rogerregorroger [2009-01-06 14:33:44 +0000 UTC]
Well, they need to make Sonic appear in some sort of prophecy every time when he jumps to seek adventure in the realms totally unrelated to....whatever his core story is. Hmmmm, how many such adventures we have so far within his franchise? Also. mavbe Sonic team people find it convenient to make Sonic into ultimate hero as whenever people bash this concept, all the filth generated by these rants seems to be flushed onto heads of Shadow and Silver (quite a lot of people blame those two for almost every little issue within whole franchise ), all while Sonic emerges unspoiled!
So, Eggman Nega has no background story, no usual explaination for what he is doing and has the tendency to just spring into action claiming he is the evil one....and that denies his post as a villain? I suppose that these "traits" are the very base of pretty much 90% of villains ever created! But it is true that within Sonic games even Doom and Mephiles are more....uhmm..fleshed-out. As characters, that is.

I actually saw SRZG in stores a couple o' weeks ago and it cracked me up since the first part was already a flop, why the heck did Sega produce a second one, even involving Jet and his associates, who were some of the most unpopular characters in Sonic EVER (Right behind Silver and Chris, seriously). I've been too much of a coward to try the game yet, because I know this is just going to end with me rollin' over the rug in my room and whining something about the loss of my childhood heroes xD

I won't get unleashed till this new Year, and the game's story doesn't look stupid, just boring, so I'm not sure if I can make fun of it.
