Or coolape, I guess.
We're back at Sonic. Mid 90's Sonic in fact.
So forget about the too smug hedgehog with the too many pointless sidecharacters, and go back to the slightly less smug Sonic with too many sidecharacters that are better in hiding their pointlessness.
Old School Sonic fans probably saw this show, newer Sonic fans probably only know it from a Nostalgia Critic's rare positive review.
His complaints didn't come further then " Lol, furries",that Antoine is kinda useless and the cliffhanger ending, so now I'm here to give you the real scoop.
First I need to adress that Sonic Satam had 2 seasons, and while that's usually a pointless production detail, in this case the 2 seasons are so different, they're practically 2 seperate series within the series.
Season 1 was the darkest and most suspenseful, doing a great job in making Robotnik feel epic, Sonic and friend's situation very dangerous, and give 10 year old kids plenty of nightmare fuel with graphic scenes of cute animal characters turned screaming in fear into mindless robots.
They even had the most successful use of a red shirt character I know of, with Cat. Since he appears in the first episode, before you know who the real main characters are, and is handled and designed as an actual main character, him getting robotized is a pretty bold but great way to throw the viewers right into the whole war thing.
And it had a nice Side character circulation system, every side character, with exception of poor Bunnie, get's his or her own episode at some point.
Season 1 had a few little problems tough, mostly the complete lack of contuity. Despite the fact that Season 1 deals the greatest blows in defeat and victory, they never matter since everyone forgets about it after one episode. (Hey, remember when Sally got all these "metal destroying plant" seeds? Or how Sonic swore that he'd save Mutsky and Cat? Guess not.)
This is especially troublesome if you watched Season 2, which had a very tight continuity going on. Characters dissapear, from cool characters (Robotnik's robot bird pet) from plothole inducing characters (why didn't Sally ever try to recruit the underground city freedom fighters for their cause in season 2?) to even emotional impact characters, like Sonic's robotized dog or Cat.
Not to mention all the other plotholes caused by Season 2,like the king's hidden swamp message that doesn't make sense with his backstory that we learn about later.
And then we have Season 2. The story is much better since it finally progresses to a conclusion, victories and losses have a higher impact on the overall story, the soundtrack is much better and so on and so on.
But the season completely DESTROYS every sense of danger and epicness the first season had. In the first episode, THE FIRST EPISODE of season 2, there's a 1 minute sequence, not even the climax of the episode, or even a "cliffhanger before commercial" moment, where Sonic invades Robotnik's throne room, takes out all his elite robots and knocks Robotnik out, takes a part of the robotizer machine and escapes.
1 damn minute. In the middle of an episode. Bam, goodbye fear for Robotnik, goodbye little respect the swatbots had and goodbye for the untouchable aspect of the robotizer machines.
As a 10 year old I had many ideas about how epic and grand a showdown between Sonic and the untouchable Robotnik must have been, so seeing Robotnik just knocked out with sonic barely making any effort is quite destructive.
Fortunatly I never got to see the second season untill a few years later since I lost the TV channel broadcasting it after the first season, so I wasn't too bothered by seeing the lighter season 2 change my perception of the show, but still.
Most side characters are completely neglected, I think Rotor and Bunny barely got a cameo in the entire duration of Season 2. Every single side-plot, including 4 entire comedy half episodes focus exclusively on Antoine (and occasionally Dulcy). I accepted him in season 1, but here he's just untolerable. The writers are wayyy to much in love with his antics.
Not to mention, as I said before, Sonic is practically Superman in Season 2, smashing Robotnik and his swatbots around like flies. In one episode he can even turn into a Tornado, even without his power ring's help. Then add a ice blast shooting dragon and a karate robot rabbit, and you got a invincible super team. Why haven't they taken over Robotnik's base over in the course of 2 episodes? Oh that's right, because Bunny's always left back home and Antoine is sent to Robotropolis all the time instead, constantly forgetting his missions, spilling secrets, running away and still be smug about it.
Wasn't he supposed to guard the super ring generator? Keep him there and take the real freedom fighters on missions already, damn.
Woa, long introduction there, here's the 2 scenes:
Robotnik observation: Perfect sample of Season 2's pathetic action scenes. Remove the close ups and show the entire scene in one wideshot and all drama falls apart. Robotnik and all his swatbots got Sonic surrounded, Sonic shouts out exactually how he'll be escaping, with a giant, easy targetable dragon.
So what does Robotnik do? Nothing. Sure, in season 2, Robotnik is in full James Bond mode, refusing to just shoot Sonic, and I'm cool with that. But hey, what about handcuffs, tasers, megamuck, ANYTHING? At least shoot Dulcy down. Instead he stands around drooling for over 13 seconds. In case you think I'm overreacting about 13 seconds, here's an experiment:
Imagine you have a big gun in your hand, an army at your disposal, and your main enemy is standing perfectly still. Now, close your eyes and count to 13. What's that, you're already trying to pull the trigger after 3 seconds? Congrats, you're a better villain then Robotnik and even faster then the "fastest thing alive".
Swatbot observation: Ahh, season 2 swatbots. They hover around their victims, and shout " Surrender!" for 30 minutes, untill either their victims agrees with them and lets himself/herself to be volunteeringly robotized, or they shrug and just walk back home.
The only thing I changed on the audio clip is add one line of " surrender hedgehog!" while Sonic and Sally talk, the rest comes straight from the show.

The first sentence?
That's either "Sonic SATAM is made by (err, for?) DIC studio's." or "Following this screen, you'll hear an unedited clip".
Interesting reason to hate the show/ comics.

Right, because a fan-comic to something offical is SUCH a fair comparison.
If it's anything like "that's my sonic" then they weren't even trying in the first place.

From what I've seen, it seems like most of the show's problems were in its pacing. Every so often, there's some really sloppy writing and a few animation hiccups, but its the show's legacy that everyone remembers.
It might be irritating to some viewers, but every show gets dated after a while. For example, shows like "Inspector Gadget" and the 80's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" had really memorable characters and charm, but their poor writing, animation, and jokes made them loose their flavor. It's a fate no television show can escape from. Not even more quality shows like "Ducktales" and "Tiny Toon Adventures" show their age.

Can't blame em for not being perfect.
Still fun to play and make jkoes aobut the little nitpicks.
The only real problems I have with Satam just remains with the writing.
How season 2 really threw all the danger and intensity of robotnik right out of the window and mostly focused on Antoine's CRAZY antics instead.

Yeah, it makes me wonder why people praise the show's writing so much. I mean, it's potentially good in a broad sense, but it's nowhere near godliness as many see it.
The current writer for the Archie Sonic comics Ian Flynn gets a lot of flack for his portrayals of the characters and rushed stories, despite the comic's recent improvement in quality. And yet they praise Ben Hurst's work on SatAM, despite his bad portrayals of the characters in the second season.

I never really cared for SatAM. Sure Sally and the other animals are cute and Sally is the one of the few decent tomboy characters but SatAM kinda frustrated me. These animals are clearly capable of using technology, why don't they make some weapo and give Robuttnick a spin dash to the face?

Well, season 1 IS boring, especially the first 5 episodes. It's more a atmosphere piece.
You can start from season 2/ episode 14 on. It's at this point where it's more plot focused and the pace is much faster. And anything that happened in the first 13 episodes won't ever be mentioned anyway.
And season 2 has the most of my apointed weirdnesses of animation.

I always thought it was funny how Sonic could destroy just about anything in that series then get freaked out by one swat bot XD I had always assumed he was just acting weird but that's just how cartoons were then I guess XD
You should really do something like this with Sonic Underground XD
Its funny how they can destroy an army of swatbots and creatures without any form of music, but almost at the end of every episode they had to sing JUST to destroy everything, and the fact that theyre names are just playoffs of Sonic's name ManIC, SONia, nothing against those two though I love them ^^
I would rather watch Underground over SATAM anyways, it seems the storyline is more balanced in Underground, but sadly it was never finished :/

The only thing I don't like is tha fact that there is an english dub(I'm Polish guy and I really suck at understanding things I hear in English, I never understand more that 50% of words). Was that show made by American people or something like that or is there a version in japanese(hopefully, with english subs at least)?

Rogerregorroger In reply to Apokaliz500 [2011-06-14 20:36:13 +0000 UTC]
It's American I'm afraid. I did see a dutch dub back home once..
If we took the trouble of dubbing it, in early 90's no less, then there should definitly be a Polish dub. Unless Poland is even worse in dubbing then us, but in that case I don't understand why you're bad in English.

Actually, SatAM NEVER aired in Poland (though there is a rumor that it could've aired around January-February 2013 on KidsCo right before that channel went defunct, possibly with a rather poor dub, there's nothing to confirm that aside from some tv programme sites).
As far as other Sonic shows go, we had Sonic Christmas Blast (which in Poland only was released on VHS and DVD in 2003 and later shown on KidsCo in 2009, worst dub I've ever heard), then there was, of course, Sonic X (all three seasons aired on Fox Kids/Jetix and it was the 4kids version with that stupid opening made by Jetix Europe, the dub wasn't as bad as Christmas Blast but still pretty bad) and then there was Sonic Underground (which didn't come to Poland until 2007 on KidsCo when that channel launched here, the dub was rather passable, the voice cast decent, probably the best out of all three dubs, which for this show seems kinda ironic, also for some reason they only dubbed and showed the first 26 episodes out of 40) and finally, Wreck-It Ralph (very good dub, including Sonic's cameo) and that's about it. If you're wondering what happened to AoStH, the show was NEVER shown in Poland. Ever. That saddens me because I really like that show.
As for dubbing in Poland in general, it's a mixed bag. Poland in the old days used to be known for its "school of polish dub", but then around the 80's, I'm assuming, the communism, or the economy, forced us to use a single voice-over (a "lector", if you will) for pretty much everything and it became such a common thing in Poland that it became the new thing Poland was known for because by now NOBODY used lector. Dubbing pretty much became a thing for children for a certain period of time but recently people are trying to change that. We have pro-dubbing movements on the internet which make sure that our local TV networks know that we want dubbed stuff instead of voice-over/lector. Disney's new "everything dubbed" policy also helps.

Heh, I always prefer sub titles. Let's me learn English, not to mention my language doesn't sound cool. It's so awkward for me now when games or movies are Dutch. Feels alien and unnatural.

I'm bad because my teachers were mostly bad or didn't care about teaching my class xD I have had good teachers from 3 years. I mostly understand everything I read, but I have problems with even find out what words are people saiyng, when I have to listen to them. After watching sonic episodes of Sonic X and Yu-Gi-Oh! with 4kids dub and Polish dub I made a conclusion that Polish dubbing its just translated dub from American, so there is virtually no diference. I think I'll just try to find Polish dub. If I won't find it, maybe it's time for me to learn how to understand American from listening xD

Rogerregorroger In reply to Apokaliz500 [2011-06-18 11:49:15 +0000 UTC]
Well, I was more implying that if Poland rarely dubs anything, all your tvshows are probably english and you'd learn it from that.
I learned my english from TV. My highschool English classes were cute for teaching me the more subtle details of grammar, but most of the time I already knew all the material.

Apokaliz500 In reply to Rogerregorroger [2011-06-27 22:50:42 +0000 UTC]
But Poland dubs quite everything to be honest. The problem is that dubs of the anime are mostly really bad, so nobody want to watch them xD
Presently, I learn english by watching anime with english subtitles, so if I don't know some word I check in dictionary to understand the whole sentence completely

Hope you won't learn English by playing Kingdom Hearts, or you'll need a dictionairy for every 2 words and still have no idea what they talk about if you translate it perfectly.

But why is it impossible to understand the dialogues in that game?
π: 0 β©: 1
Rogerregorroger In reply to Apokaliz500 [2011-07-09 16:32:56 +0000 UTC]
Because the dialogues are either Typical vague "The writers haven't tought of what the plot is, but we throw in a scene were the villains talk about the plot anyway" scenes, or endless poetry. Stuff like
When the darkness comes to the heart. That day, THAT MAn will be covered in darkness of the light of the soul. The heart will be filled with despair untill HE goes THERE to activate IT.
The main thing that annoys me in Square Enix games is that they keep talking about big noble things like "Friendship" and "Truth" and "Betrayal" and "darkness" but there's no context for it at all.
If they make a story about friendship, you will NOT get a story of friendship, you just get characters SHOUTING and having endless speeches about the word friendship, without ever getting any REAL friends. They're just buzzwords.
