Description

Well technically night here but yah I needed a break from staring at guns, bullets and explosions for the past 24 hours (don’t ask!). Here is the Ms. Charova sitting down for some breakfast and tea. The environment was purchased using the donations from last month (thank you so much <3!). As a tiny bit of a challenge and the first proper render of the year, I said “Ok. Don’t use any physical or emissive lights. Go!” and this is what I came up with!

This was done purely using an HDRI (an image used for overall illumination in a scene) and Daz3D’s Iray settings. I feel like a quick tutorial may be in the works for this, we’ll see. I’m vowing this year to master environmental lighting so I can do some more non-portrait type renders. You can find the full resolution image on my  Patreon (don’t worry it’s a freebie )

The big black dog next to Latika in the back there is still a test character, I’m still fiddling around with names (maybe my lovely Patrons should name her!?). I’d love to have combat dogs, with their own vests. goggles….and I’m getting sidetracked again.

The issue I have with HDRI lighting for interior scenes is that the image reflects too much on every surface in the scene, especially windows and metal.
You did a really good job avoiding that, I see no IBL reflections on the windows. Is there some technique for that?

Absolutely! You can sometimes avoid the issue by tuning down the 'Enviorment map' under the Render Settings->Enviorment section to lower the intensity of the light from the HDRis. Then to compensate for the lower of light, you can play with the Shutter Speed (Exposure) and Film ISO. This doesn't work 100% of the time but I've found it to be consistent to avoid the issue. The image uses one of the HDRis found in Dreamlights 'Soft Image HDRI' set with the map set to about 0.15, Film ISO at 450 and shutter speed at about 80. There was a tiny bit of tweaking in Photoshop for saturation, but that also can be done in Daz as well. Hope that helps!
