Β Dirk, could you be more explicit? After watching this painting, I can't help but feelingΒ disquiet and sad... The only light is for the "jury" ( who?) at the back ground... people arriving in darkness ans leaving in darkness. What's their "happy few"? Sometimes, your inspiration is impenetrable enough to me...

rollarius55 In reply to ClairObscur16 [2016-06-11 13:01:49 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, the happy few are those behind the selectors..
This painting is inspired by the problems of the refugees who try to reach Europe..
But one can see it also as a kind of Last Judgment..

Β Dirk, I wonder why you have been so impressed by the migrants?Β Have they invaded Belgium? Is their situation so horrible?
You always paint them in a dark (black?) dreary universe...A true "last judgement"! Please, submit a little Provençal pastel, with light and sun! The spring has been wet and grey. i need to change my mind! : rofl:

I don't understand why people aren't touched by that problem... Wouldn't we all do the same in their situation..
At the beginning of the first world war my grandparents (from my father's side) and their family all fleed to France and lived for some years in a little village in Auvergne..
Within 2 weeks I travel to Aups in the South of your country, I will stay there for about 12 days.. Perhaps after that my mind will get other inspiration

Β Don't misjudge about me: I'm touched by this distressing problem , eventhough i think thatΒ the ONU ought to settle it, before the last alive people die when crossing the Medirerranean sea....( There are french soldiers in Syrie, but what can they do, alone?)
Β No, what I wanted to mean is: why are you soΒ inspired by refugees in painting? I hate war and all its consequences. War is men's affair! Β I would prefer forsake my brushes rather than painting war! Will you understand me? ( Where did your family come from when arriving in Auvergne?)
Β I'm obsessed by light, light everywere. No light in the war....

okay I understand..
we have talked about this before: I often feel attracted to paint sad things, you don't...
how do you mean where did the come from? They came from Belgium, the city of Roulers..

Β They came from Belgium to Auvergne, then , go back to Belgium? Were they speaking french?Have they kept links with people in Auvergne?

rollarius55 In reply to ClairObscur16 [2016-06-13 07:46:19 +0000 UTC]
yes indeed
one of my grand uncles even married a French woman (with the family name Viala) but after some years they returned together to Belgium
Many many Belgians fleed in that first world war, a part went to France, others to the Netherlands, others to Brittain. And i can imagine they were happy that there were people in that countries tat card for them and helped them..
The city where my family lived (and where I still live (Roeselare, Roulers in French)) was the city most near to the front (on the German site); it was destroyed almost completely during the years of the war..

Β You could write a "war novel", witn your family tree in epigraph....Β I remember theΒ cohorts of refugees, in Provence, during the war, even though I was so young! While my father was working abroad ( he was an engineer), my mother had welcome a Jew pharmacist , who was playing piano, and crying while listenning to my father's records of Chopin or Verdi, on the phonograph...My mother was a veritable adventurous woman...
Β Have you still roots in Auvergne?

rollarius55 In reply to ClairObscur16 [2016-06-14 11:29:08 +0000 UTC]
I wrote a family chronical more than 10 years ago, but the emphasis was on all the facts I had discovered during years in the archives.
So no? I haven't roots in Auvergne, but I've been there 3 times...
Gee, that's quite a story too. Were your parents also born in the Povence.. I was born after the war, but heard all the war stories of my parents and family members so many times..

Correct, Chris!
This can be at the gate of Europe. Can be interpreted as the last ordeal too..
