Description
*Warning for slight gore, injury and car angst*Grem and Acer (c) Disney-Pixar
Not faring well in the pub brawl, a very dented-up Grem and Acer are trying to figure out how they'll limp their way home, since Acer is missing a wheel and Grem's shocks are destroyed.
Grem has suffered a badly caved-in door, which is not unlike the injury he inflicted on Rod Redline, and his roof rack now looks a little like his mentor Professor Zundapp's. Half his grille has been shattered, exposing his air intake (?) behind it. He has a real danger of losing that eye if he doesn't seek medical attention, which neither car is likely to receive if they go on the run.
Despite the way this looks, Grem isn't angry at Acer, they're just arguing as usual. This may have been drawn with considerable sympathy for them but the intention was not to make villains look heroic. Grem and Acer did some awful stuff in the movie and showed no remorse, but when they were surrounded in the bar and about to be beaten, they exchanged this pitiful look that suggested they'd been bullied and beaten many times before.
*Update* 4-21-12: So now there's a "Crash Damage Grem" Quick Changers diecast, complete with caved-in doors and the saddest, most pitiful little expression ever. Mattel depicted the crushed-in doors far better than I did, with the hockey-stick stripes actually bent inward.

I know, really? They're adorable! The "bullied lemon cars holding a grudge against the world" theme was really an interesting direction to take for the Cars movies. (That's in no way excusing their actions, as they did some truly terrible stuff, but then again we are talking about characters who live in a fictional world populated by living cars.)
Thanks; this is my all-time favorite drawing. I know there's more than a few perspective errors and Acer's too short but I still like the way it turned out.

I thought that was an interesting take in the Cars movie as well. It made me feel pretty sympathetic for all the lemons and "run-down" vehicles since there treated like they are unwanted and garbage which is actually how some old cars are treated in reality.

That was one of the worst beatings of my entire life! I'm still recovering from it with Acer, we got a lot more injured then you think. We'll be fine though but we're still on the run. My eye burns severely but I'd rather be free of the spies then have my sight.

Really, though! They did some utterly despicable things but there was still that sense of pity for them, I guess because they were just that mistreated their entire lives.
And even before Cars 2 came out and we only had the movie trailers to speculate on, I actually predicted Mater would try to help them in the end. I could really see him doing that if he actually had had the chance, towing them to safety because that's just his nature to help out any car down on his luck.
"Hey there, now, fellers, it looks like ah got here a lil' too late but ah'm startin' tuh see this is all a big misunderstandin'. Now if ya'll'd be kind enough tuh let these poor lil' Lemons git on their way, ah'll skeedaddle 'em outta here 'fore yah know it, an' the next round's on me!"

Aw, thank you I'm doing fine now but I have a few more injuries, missing teeth then I had before, just perfect. I won't be doing anything for awhile as I got a lot more injured then that picture shows, I actually lost one of my tires. It's good to know someone cares about us though everyone seems to think we are just losers because of being l-l I can't even say it. About joining C.H.R.O.M.E? I'd rather choke on my own oil then join them! Again thanks for caring though (Smiles weakly showing my missing teeth.)

I agree, and I wouldn't be shocked someday if an official Disney-Pixar book has them turning to the good side. The Lemons are the first truly evil villains in the Carsverse -- in the first movie, Chick would do anything to win, including cheating and hurting other cars, but he wasn't the type to kill anyone and when he crashed the King, it was an accident. The Lemons have actually killed other cars, though it's not clear whether Grem and Acer are directly responsible for any deaths.
Ironically I can see them serving as "good-guy goons" -- fighters -- for C.H.R.O.M.E., but it's just as easy to imagine them turning back to the dark side if they felt their contributions weren't appreciated.

I also thought they might have died when I saw the clip of them getting beat up in one of the movie trailers. However, as a friend pointed out, the scene was played more for laughs, like the anthro-car version of a "fight cloud" with arms and legs (or tires and fenders) emerging from the dust cloud of fighters. I doubt they looked very nice afterwards, though.
If you turn on the director's commentary on the DVD, Lasseter says he thought this was the perfect comeuppance for these two, getting beat up by the working class. That's actually pretty deep, since they got pummeled by the very folks they thought they were, working hard on the oil rigs.

Yeah, it was kind of what I suspected and my mom thought so too (I made her watch the movie with me ). That is true about how the scene was played more for laughs and all that. I would LOVE it if they appeared in a Cars 3, you know? Then again, who knows if there will be a Cars 3...
Oh, I'll definitely have to check that out! All I did was watch the movie and the Mater bonus scene thing. I agree about that...poor guys. I always felt bad for them.

Aw poor boys 3: Even though they did a lot of bad I don't think they deserved to get beaten up. If someone had opened their heart to them I'm sure they would have not ended up like this...as with many other Lemons I'm sure. And I wonder if anyone would lend a tire to help them now in this state, certainly wouldn't want Grem to loose something as important as his eyesight
Great drawing though, interesting idea to draw them what they looked like after the bar brawl.

Thanks. I do plan to write something about them after their bar brawl but I'm not sure how it would go just yet. I could see someone helping them out but if that someone was an OC I can already hear the cries of "Mary Sue!"
They fared better than the many minions who died, but seeing them getting beaten up sort of struck a nerve because these were characters who were bullied and almost certainly beat up for most of their lives, so getting thrown into that bar was probably their worst nightmare. :<

Your welcome gah Mary Sues, a character is a character. If you want your character to be a certain way or something to happen a certain way, people's classifications of what a character should be shouldn't deter making a character exist/do something. And chances are the people who are complaining about Mary Sues, their characters are "Mary Sues" themselves. sorry for the rant thar Oo
I bet it was poor Lemons don't have an easy life at all and never get a break. They are kind of like the kids who get bullied and act out of built up anger over the years.

I thought I commented on this.. O_o
You know, I gotta admit, I totally couldn't remember what happened to these guys till I watched the movie again. Honestly they're pretty lucky I think.. considering they're badguys and the high body-count Cars 2 had.
Poor Acer, he really looks pretty cute actually, all wide-eyes and scared looking. I bet that hanging bumper is pretty painful.. <:
I really like the idea they had for Cars 2 making the roof racks into hair like that.. I thought that was a really interesting idea. Plus I really like that they made the villains sympathetic, that always seems to be a mark of a well writen movie.. when you actually kinda think "you know.. I kinda would like those guys to succeed a little.. I mean they kinda deserve to don't they?" Plus what worse a reason is there to be mocked and teased then what model car you are? It's seriously racism.
Do you think the cars in the Cars world can heal over time like humans?

Rollerwings In reply to Half-dude [2011-12-13 14:04:08 +0000 UTC]
They are lucky to be alive. When I saw the movie trailer that showed the Lemons on the oil rig getting blown up, I knew there would be a high body count for the bad guys and I was worried for Grem and Acer.
Acer does have a more cute persona. His bumper was already askew from being struck with the restroom stall door, so another good hit and it could have been left dangling.
I'm intrigued by the sympathetic villains, and of course prejudice against their type exists in real life as well. When my mechanic heard I was considering buying a Chevy Citation he relayed the message to me that he'd never work on it because they were, in his words, junk then and junk now. :/
I've had many geeky conversations with other fans about it, but I think Cars could heal to some extent. Structural damage from a major wreck would require outside care, i.e. physical repair, but injuries to the eyes, mouth and other more organic parts have the potential to heal. Some cars have missing teeth but their gums are pink and look as organic as ours, so I doubt they'd have to see a traditional mechanic to have dental injuries treated, but they might need a dentist.

I actually had a friend see this movie before I did and I made the mistake of asking him about it. He'd told me about the agent being turned into a cube and how he was totally disgusted after seeing it. He also said that the badguys got crushed too, like in the same way as a cruel irony/payback. So I went to see the movie and the agent-cube didn't sicken me at all.. that wasn't too bad but the whole rest of the movie I kept anticipating the badguys to get crushed and was really confused when they never did. Turns out, he was talking about the two cars during the street fight with McMissle that got caught up in the elevator.. wouldn't call that crushed by whatever >>
I guess you'd pick up on their personalities more if you were focusing on them. They had such little screen-time I thought that I didn't really pick up any personality in them at all.. they seemed identical. Heck I don't think I even realized that was them in the bar scene the first time.. I thought it was two random cars. XD
I think some of the best villains are sympathetic ones. I think that's one of the reasons I like the Batman movies so much, almost all the villains in that series are victims themselves. But back to what you're saying, I have know doubt that 'modelism' carries over in real life. I think that's why I commended you so much for buying your Gremm.. because anyone else probably would have dumped him just for being one.
Makes sense, I think it's common belief that the Cars cars are organic inside.. almost like an exoskeleton.

Rollerwings In reply to Half-dude [2011-12-29 15:38:40 +0000 UTC]
Sympathetic villains have always intrigued me. Not that the sympathy and past pain condone what they do, but it makes them deeper characters. John Lasseter even referred to this in one of the interviews about Cars 2. He said Professor Zundapp thinks he's doing the right thing to protect his oil interests.
The elevator scene is confusing because Finn kills two cars when they are already unconscious and no longer a threat. If you look at screencaps, the Trunkov sedan definitely dies, because the elevator crushes his entire cab flat. The yellow Pacer, Fred Fisbowski, also takes a severe hit at the top of the elevator but his frame is completely intact, at least from the angle we could see them from. In another interview, Lasseter explained that any cars shown getting killed were turned away from the audience so their animate features weren't seen. The fact that neither car's face is seen makes me think they both may have died. Anyway, the elevator scene was never graphic, but crushing the bad guys in an actual car crusher would have been another thing altogether.
If you watch Grem and Acer very closely, Acer is less mature and over-eager (plunging into sewage tankers, shouting during Rod's interrogation, etc.) while Grem is all business and fiercely loyal to Professor Zundapp. Their profiles on the Cars site say both are deeply angry for their years of mistreatment by the rest of the world.

Half-dude In reply to Rollerwings [2012-01-04 23:11:34 +0000 UTC]
Well in some movies I actually would argue that it all DOES condone what they do.. I think the lemons are actually pretty close to that myself actually.. I mean sure they killed people but their ultimate goal was just to become a corporate super-power.. after all the crap lemons are put through I would argue they deserve to be able to hold something above all the non-lemons. But that might just be the 'have been teased all through school' person talking.
Professor Z was one of the more interesting characters in the movie to me. I like that if you just see the trailer or are seeing it from the beginning for the first time.. you actually think he's the one in charge, but then you find out he's just a high ranking leader. So that was something I didn't know, are you saying Zundapp actually owns all those oil platforms?
Damn.. Fin is kind of an asshole isn't he? XD It makes sense they don't show their faces when they die.. since they just look like regular cars from any other angle (and apparently it's ok for cars to die -_>; While I guess you could say they died based on that, but the fact is it's left unsaid so you can really just say whatever you want.
Yeah the elevator scene was nothing, I was actually more horrified at the first kill of the movie where the car falls off the oil platform screaming and then hits the water and has his parts float up.. I thought THAT was pretty sick. XD Not a graphic sick.. but a implied sickness of death in a kid's movie. But yeah I was afraid to see the movie when I thought that was how the badguys went.. I thought they were gonna like drop Zundapp, Acer, and Grem into some compactor at the end and crush them.. like off screen but you'd still hear their screams? *shivers* Just sounded like the kind of irony that Disney loves to do.. seeing as they crushed that agent at the beginning. (which I was also under the impression they'd show).
Acer almost has kind of a little brother-ness around Grem doesn't he? Like trying too hard to look good in front of him that he screws up worse.
