Description
Just a bit of expression practice before bed.I made two variations of each face angle. The vertical columns on the far left and far right. I then mixed and matched the eyebrows and mouth features to achieve different looks for the middle two vertical columns. It's a fun and quick way to experiment with different ideas! I'd recommend trying it out, yourself!
I might update this with some colors, later.

Good job! Its so funny to me, to see how just changing the lips and eyebrows gives you a totally different expression. (and sometimes the eyes) Keep it up!!Β \(^.^)/

Wish I could draw.Β All my artwork is through writing.Β Now you need to do a collage of sad and angry faces to accompany this one.

It's amazing how much eyebrows, does for an expression.
I mean I've known several people, with "Congenital Hypotrichosis", and it is really hard to read their expression.
For does who don't know what "Congenital Hypotrichosis" is:
It's a disease where you are born without the possibility of hair growth, nowhere on your body.
But amazing work Ronindude, I really like your art style, and keep up the awesome work.

Thank you very much! Yeah, eyebrows do a lot for expression, don't they?

I sho do loves me some expressions.
I draw expressions so crappy sometimes, I think I have Autism. XD Stuff like this is always a treat to reference because, like some kind of robot learning to be a person, I can look at it and go "Oooh, THAT'S what happiness looks like, duh!"
So, thanks for posting this! It might not be what draws the people in from the thoroughfare, but I dig it. : }

Thank you! I spend a lot of time researching expressions, even though I tend to use a favorite few. XD It's really important, though, to study expressions, so I am glad that you find this useful! Another good bit of practice is to make faces in a mirror and draw simplified cartoon versions of what you see your own face doing.
Plus it's good clean fun!
...The making faces, I mean. XP

Hah! I admit, I did the self-reference bit recently (iPhone rather than mirror) because you just can't Google "you know, that face you make when you're angry but not being too up front about it and you just lower your head and slide your lower jaw a little to the left or right...". You'd be surprised, but not a lot comes up!
And don't sweat it - everyone has their 'favorite expressions'. Dull surprise is always a fave of mine.

Haha, yeah... I didn't find anything useful with that google description... Though I use google quite a lot, I try to narrow down a genre of expression, or just keep my eyes open when I am browsing DA. Lots of gems, here!

This is really cool. So interesting to see how the expression changes so much with just some changes to the mouth and eyebrows. Cool to see you working on this kind of stuff. You don't get to mess with expression in your commissions to much, but you've got a real talent for them.

Part of my neck problems have come from me working overtime so I can get stuff like this done. You are right, my commission work seldom let's me play with expression, so in order to get that fulfillment from drawing, I have to make time for personal work and practice pieces like this. I think that spending more time on personal work, lately, has contributed to my recent artistic growth. Commission work, as much as I appreciate and enjoy it, doesn't often lend to creative advancement. Mostly I am just drawing another girl in another pinup pose with another neutral/raised eyebrow expression in another skimpy outfit. Again, I enjoy it, it's just not as fulfilling as getting to tell a story with my art. I get excited when I am commissioned to draw a dude, because its something different! XD

I totally love these, Β it showcases your style so well. Β Question, I wonder if an elfs ears could be changed to reflect mood....

RoninDude In reply to Jeardawg [2015-02-27 02:17:11 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! And yes, my plan has been to use the elf ears for expression, though for some reason I did not do that with these... Now I want to go in and edit them to reflect that! XD
