You should feel sorry for the fans who were BLINDSIDED by that SLAP IN THE FACE PUNCH IN THE GUT crap they pulled on their OWN fans, the shipping fans that happened to have a different idea of what their story meant, when they should have just felt HAPPY and GRATEFUL that SO many peopled LOVE their characters enough to THINK of them outside of what is written in the show.
YES, THEY SHOULD BE GRATEFUL. The fans don't have to be grateful, because without fans there would be no show. Just look at any show from Nick or Cartoon network over the last five years. There is more than one show that did NOT MAKE IT because they didn't have enough of a loyal BASE TO MAKE THE NETWORK CONTINUE WITH THE SERIES TO COMPLETION.

The CREATORS.. in the actual SHOW decided to make them DATE EACH OTHER! sometimes, implying A LITTLE MOAR THAN JUST HOLDING HANDS. *point to sokkaXsuki love tent interrupted by zuko in the Zuko-helps-Katara-take-vengeance episode* .. *THEN points to just about every ZukoXMai scene excuse my-tongue-in-cheek-humor* XP

If anyone can be blamed for pairing characters, look first to the creators who INFLUENCE THE FANS.

LOOK TO THE "CREATORS" for blame in that regard. LIterally, they asked for it. They propagated it.
I daresay they ENJOY that kind of thing, based on their sense of humor so they have to deal with the ramifications, so stop WHINING about how UNFAIR everyone is to them.
