Description Ranch near Glenns Ferry Idaho, 2019.

I took a similar photo back in 2013

When a cow has twins, she will often reject one of them. The rejected calf is the "bummer" calf and has to be either adopted by another cow who has lost her calf, or it has to be hand fed.

This trip I learned something new.  In addition to feeding one of the twins, we have to pay attention to the gender of both of the twins.  If at least one of the twins is a bull, then all is well.  But, If both of the calves are heifers, they both will be unfit to breed.  In a case like that you don't want them to get mixed into the herd.  Best to just fatten them up for market or slaughter.
