The name "Montezuma Castle" is doubly wrong. First off, it has no connection to the Aztecs and Montezuma had not even been born until at least 40 years after this place had been abandoned. Secondly, this wasn't any sort of a castle. More of a multi-unit apartment building. It mainly "defended" against floods in the valley below.

Anyway, it was built and used by the Sinagua people in the 1100's and abandoned around 1425 A.D.
