Description
By request - a process on how I color and tackle issues with lighting. I tried to make it as straightforward as possible. XD I'm not one for long explanations as I start to confuse myself. Hope some of you find this helpful. My coloring method is not so different from how I would work with oil paint/acrylic. I work from dark to light, and use overlay and multiply layer effects sparingly at the very end.

I credited this for my new page <3 Thanks a lot for the tips! I'd never thought of using layer masks before, silly me.

Regarding note number three.. got me a nice mental image of you checking how to draw the light on the assassin to the left. Sorry.

So overall you remove the objects on front to work on the background? How does one avoid the situation where you do not remember where the ones on the front are? Or look like?
Do you copy the pic first?

I only turn off the objects in the front layers to lay in rough colors for the background. After that, all my layers are turned on as I continue to work on the entire piece. Forgetting where the objects are shouldn't be a problem as the hidden layers can be turned on and off if an instant by clicking the eye icon.

I really would love to see a story that led up to this point I think it would be extremely interesting/fun to write.

Awesome, thanks for sharing!! I tend to establish middle tones, and then work dark and light in in that order, both in digital and in oil painting, but your way seems simpler. Time to experiment!!

I've been doing that too, in the same exact order. Working from dark to light might actually be wiser - it might save several phases of shading and blending. I tried that on the newest page (last panel), on Utha and Seranni, and I have to say it was FAST. There might be something to it. ^^

Yes, exactly -- I think I'm going to try it out on my next page. Awesome, this gives me hope!
Speaking of which, I have to go comment on that -- I accidentally closed it, and then forgot to remind myself to go looking for it

Ehehe XD It's okay!
Also, it takes some getting used to, working from dark to light, but it's fun!

Awesome process explanation. Thanks for sharing :]
Also I'm very glad You wrote about research and observation (mirror). I've noticed some people really like to avoid those two things, looking for ready solutions, while the above are, as obvious as it sounds, most important advices for every technique and style.

I work from dark to light, as well! -high five- I find it's easier to get value relationships that way. I don't use masks, though. Might be worth looking into that. Thank you for this!
What do you use the noise grain for? Just a general texture for the whole image?

rooster82 In reply to Orycia [2012-03-09 09:53:14 +0000 UTC]
The noise grain layer is on overlay at 15% over the entire image. It softens the digital look a bit. Just a personal preference.

That's a pretty good idea. Sometimes digital painting is too perfect and smooth.

No seriously, for me pale, armed, tall persons with yellow hair and
memberships in weird secret societies are far more creepy...
