Description
I've been trying to make the right chainmail brush and I think I've finally got it! I had to test it out!I really should do reference images for the rest of the cast in the fan comic, but OMG, I'm so lazy.

I just realized that in my head, my Cousland's armor (since in my headcanon she survives and helps the Warden) looks just like Gen's.Β
I feel horrible

how do you get it so the background isn't visible at all? (If that makes sense. . . .)

Normally it bothers me when a suit of armor is lacking one pauldron, but here I actually don't mind it. Probably because she's covered in enough chainmail to make up for the lack of protection around her shoulder. I wish you would draw armor like this more often.
And Gen is simply amazing here. :3

Heh, it kinda looks like it now that you've said it. I didn't use that as a ref though.

I did wonder that, too. But yeah; it struck me as either a accidental happenstance or a ref of it, since you didn't mention any refs to it, I had to ask.

The chest plate shape actually looks more science fiction storm-trooperesque than medieval dragon-agesque, which kind of makes it seem a bit out of place with the other pieces. But that's just 'my' opinion, and I don't want to belabor the fact that this is an excellent piece of artwork, even if it is a concept sketch, it could be stand alone art easily.
I'm enthralled by the rest of the hauberk, especially the attention to not only chainmail detail and shading but character detail as well. She's not only sporting her family crest on the chest plate but also wearing the Cousland colors of dark gold and green. very nice!

Whoo, it's brilliant!! I really like the chainmail brush too ^^
DAO armor is both a bit clunky in itself plus super complicated - DA2 fixed the matter somewhat, at least with heavy armor, there were some styles there I really liked, plus they were more realistic too. ^^ But I definitely dig your version, it looks economical to draw and very functional!
Plus I really Gen more and more all the time. ^^

Ah yes, very complicated. I prefer DA2's armor designs as well.
Hehe. I try to make my life easier by simplifying the armor design. I'm guessing I'll simplify it even more when it appears in pages. x_x

That's totally wise. Speeds up the process. I, on the other hand, am so dumb that I'm actually making the armor more and more complicated all the time. XD But 's link was so awesome that I might make a few subtle changes to victoria's and sigrun's armor right away ^^

I love it. I love the crest etched into the breastplate. I love the layers which makes it look flexible, easy to move in. I love that atop a horse, she would shine in the sun and look like some sort of avenging angel, which she also very much is.
I think Alistair doesn't stand a chance

The armor from DA was always a bit too fantasy and not enough practicality for my taste. I like realism., and a lot of the armor was not realistic. Especially the massive/heavy armor (those pauldrons... ) Most of the medium and leather armor types were fine.
I like that your comic takes liberties with the armor. Id do the same if my drawing skills werent mediocre.

Maye the chainmail is a bit too shiny, but I love how the armor looks. So metallic!
I also have issues with the textures

'Tis gorgeous! Very elegant, but still practical. (I think I've become addicted to drawing armor, especially the heavy plate -- I don't know why, somebody stop me! ). And, chainmail brush? Brilliant idea! I love how it looks!

Beautiful Design. But the shoulderplate won't work that way. Usually a shoulderplate is fixed to the shroud with one leather band in the middle. Like here: [link]

WHoo, that's a brilliant link! *bookmarks* It's really good to see how it actually works, I have to admit I was improvising with it too, and the way they're attached in the game, it's more or less like how Roo has drawn it. I had the idea there was a strap somewhere but it's definitely good to see how it actually works! Thanks for my part too!

Glad I could help xD If you wanna draw realistic armour, look around in Reenactment and Larp shops. That stuff was made for wearing But don't you ever dare to ad spiked leather armours... These things are just ungly and unprotective like hell.

victricia In reply to TariToons [2011-06-27 14:31:39 +0000 UTC]
That I have done. Also I took pictures in the castle of Innsbruck, they had LOADS and LOADS of old armor on show there. Pity the rest of my family was in such a hurry, I could've stayed there to stare for ages.
Something people never realise is how thin plate armor in fact is - the cumbersome fantasy versions would be way too heavy to wear. ^^
Spiked leather? No way in hell! except maybe for darkspawn a bit, because they're dumb. Lol. Some of them have spiked pauldrons I think. But yeah, I wouldn't do that - it's both stupid and difficult to draw. ^^
