Description
A line up of the various forms the Triffids have taken, from John Wyndham's book The Day of the Triffids. The 50s Triffid is based on the original sketch Wyndham did himself, which shows it looking more like an animal then a plant.
The 60s version came from the 1962 movie, which was amidst an array of B-horror movies at the time, so the backstory of the triffids in this version were that they were extra-terrestrial, and thus looked a lot more menacing and gruesome.
The 80s Triffid came from the original BBC series in 1982, which, to date, is the closest adaptation of the book. The triffids however, even though they match the description given in the book, are unlike the rest and have a brightly coloured flower and look like actual plants rather than creatures.
And finally, the recent adaptation by the BBC at the end of last year in 2009, shows the triffids looking more like the 60s movie triffids and were produced in CGI (and very good for the BBC at that). In this they have a dark blue flower and seem to be the largest incarnation of the beast so far.

This is awesome! I grew up on the 60's version & to this day that Ice Cream Truck music is THE most terrifying sound along with the Triffid's, slurping, clicking & gurgling noises....lol
But this is a cool depiction of each version/generation. Your 60's version's head looks like a dead Pea Shooter from Plants vs Zombies...which is a nice touch (don't know if that was intentional or not, but cool either way)

Hey, sorry this is a month late!
Yeah man, that film still gives me nightmares, especially the ice cream truck music! Like, even if it wasn't the end of the world, that's not nice music for kids to chase down ice creams to.
And thanks!

They all look friggen amazing!Β
All of them have their own spin on the Triffid that made each and every one of them unique in their own way.Β
Although its probably the least faithful adaption of the plant, I like the 00s Triffid the most, mainly because itβs not only the largest, but a lot more aggressive, especially when it has all those roots to entangle itβs prey with. Plus, I love that weird clicking sounds it makes, or as Mason described βRustling, tick-tockingβ sound, really creepy. They use their sting like a whip and the flower head tops off its sinister appearance. Thatβs what I love about it! What I love about them all.Β

Yeah, the hooded appearance of the 00s is definitely creepy, although the 60s version is the one that gave me nightmares, almost like an alien, a proper monster.
It'll be interesting to see what future adaptations bring.

i saw the title and was instantly reminded of my uncle. back in the day, he went with his friend to this sci-fi film marathon in some theater and when it was finished the nice neighborhood it was held in did a flip and it was all shady and frankly unsafe for a couple of teenagers...
needless to say, he recites this story at least once a week.
day of the triffidsss!
(never read or saw any of the films but i like this anyway.)

Well thanks! Sounds like a fitting setting for a post-apocalyptic story!
You should give the book a read, it's probably the best version of it.

So that is what the 2009 triffid looks like. Never seen any other picture of it.
I think the 80s triffids are scariest because they are the most plant-like. Something that looks like an ordinary flower is more disturbing than a Sci-Fi looking monster in my opinion.

Agreed, I think it's the way they appear non-threatening that makes them more sinister!

It's a shame that the 2009 version wasn't as good as the 1982 version.
Excellent sketches though.

watched all 3 triffids over the last couple days. I think the 60's ones are the most shit-your-pants inducing, though interestingly it's the only one in which the triffids are actually defeated.

Rootay In reply to Orannis0 [2011-02-23 17:38:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the 60s was the era where B-movies made their big break, and I think the idea of 'being defeated' came from the War of the Worlds movie from the 50s, and a lot followed suit, Triffids one of them. Its a shame, because they were scary. Defeated by sea water. Pfft. haha

Orannis0 In reply to Rootay [2011-02-23 22:44:38 +0000 UTC]
well it does more or less make sense; sea water kills most land plants. It doesn't turn them to sludge, but it IS a movie.

It's true!
There's a certain crushing inevitability about them.
But I think they really go hand in hand with the blindness. Otherwise they're just another movie monster.

Nice. I preferred the 80's version myself as it was the closest to the book (really was dissapointed that the BBC made shit out of the new one as it was no where near the original story, which is surprising for the BBC as they usually pride themselves on being as close to a novel as possible).

I know what you mean, the BBC like to make good of original stories. I did enjoy it, though, even though it was an older story whose content probably didn't transpose well to today's settings, the BBC tried their best. I do like the design of the 80s, though!

There is a whole load of redesigning done by the BBC with many of them not really needing any redesigning in the first place. Such things are like the new Daleks they brought out (I really rant on about how pathetic they really are so I appologise in advance), the Daleks were good enough as they were they did not need to be made into tellytubby versions of a popular monster.
In regards to the Triffids, yes the original story couldn't have been transposed straight into the modern age, but the original story was a hell of a load better than what they made it. (I blame the BBC employing crap screen writers who have no understanding of the Sci-fi genre as it turned out that the screen writer for the recent Triffid show was a guy who writes about soap operas).
I appologise if this sounds like a rant, I didn't intend it to be so, but I do feel strongly on these points.

No, I agree on the Dalek and Sci-fi writers thing!
Firstly, you can kind of tell that 2009 Triffids was..lacking something apocalyptic about it, ironically. It's been done before and better, basically. I did enjoy the look of the triffids, I think the CGI was well done for the BBC. But, they do like recycling things. But, secondly, as for the Daleks..what?! They look like Power Rangers or Mini Coopers now! Why the hell do they need a YELLOW one?? Or an ORANGE one?? These colours may have worked if they weren't so damn luminous!
I'll admit that the episode idea of 'new paradigm' daleks was nice for a set-up for a new race of daleks for the newest doctor, but there was really no need to make them LESS scary! I mean, they've got those weird hump-backs, as well, which just deducts from any sort of fear factor. Okay, they're A LOT bigger, but, so what.
What was quite creepy was in The Big Bang with the stone Dalek and it's lone-glowing eye.
However, we seem to share a rant haha.

I they're way too big now. They'd only be able to appear in stories set outside or in warehouses, like the one they disguised as the Dalek ship. No wonder you're not going to see them again.

Wow, this the best triffid deviantpiece I've seen so far!
I personally prefer the 50s version, as it is easy to underestimate. Part of the horror of the novel was that the triffids were initially percieved as almost comical.

Rootay In reply to Dark-Hyena [2010-01-19 17:04:28 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much, that means alot!
Yeah, I agree. Throughout most of the story they remain almost as a background element and aren't properly seen as a threat until halfway through. I still think there's yet to be an uber-awesome-mega-cool version of them to be depicted yet. I did really like the newest '09 ones, though!

Dark-Hyena In reply to Rootay [2010-01-19 22:13:47 +0000 UTC]
No problem
I found it funny that Masen stated early in the book that docked triffids appealed to children in parks. With the exception of the 80s triffid, no other design would be appealing to children. Can you imagine playing with the 60's, 00's design? You'd get nightmares, apart from the fact that even without their stingers those particular variations had tentacles/vines which could choke or slash you to death. The horror of the triffids should not primarily be in their appearance but in their habits and intelligence. What could be more disturbing than people suddenly being attacked by cute "pets" which previously had been a source of childish amusement?

Haha, that is very true, the 60s triffids are just nightmarish! I was 6-7 when I first saw the movie, and they've remained in my nightmares ever since lol.
But agreed, it's quite sinister when something harmless becomes terrifying!

Yeah, I did enjoy the new BBC one, quite liked the design of the triffids. I felt as though they underplayed the whole blindness of it all though, but it I liked how they incorperated the Sun into it. Good CGI for the BBC, too!

Think my favourite actual version of the story is still the book, but my favourite adaptation so far iiiissssss.......probably the recent BBC version.

Actually,
I haven't seen much of mega man...or any.
So it isn't a case of not liking it, it is a case of not knowing how much I like it yet.
I am going to say the recent BBC adaption. Mainly because when it made changes they were for the best, oh and the triffids were actually, unlike in the 80s version (they were just funny).
Yes! Ghostbusters!

Ahh, you should have a go at megaman, fun games! But, I actually think that 28 Days Later is a good adaptation of the triffids, though it hasn't got any triffids in, it's a very similar story.
yay Ghostbusters
