Well, it's LGBT Pride Month. So for this week, I'm gonna have a few same-sex couples I ship. Starting off is Rosalina x Samus, or RoSamus as I call them.This was one of, if not the, first femslash couples I shipped. I feel that they'd have a lot in common, being guardians of their galaxies and whatnot. They're protective, powerful, and both soar across the stars. They're similar but not identical. Rosalina uses magic and Samus uses technology, Rosalina's more jovial (at least in the spin-offs) while Samus is more stern and serious. I wouldn't say Rosalina's a "manic pixie dream girl," but I would say that their personalities would work well together due to similar goals and interests.
I've wanted to draw the two together for awhile. I've said it before that I'm hesitant to draw these two together. I'm always worried that gross people are going to ignore the loving aspect of their relationship and instead focus on two waifu characters in a lesbian relationship. I'd rather not seem like I'm a contributor to the reduction of homosexuality to a fetish for heterosexuals. Still, I want to draw them together because I feel they'd be a loving couple, particularly after seeing this adorable piece by Azuhreidii . So Rosalina is giving Samus a hug. It's a simple gesture, but it still warms Samus' heart.

I can understand your worry about people fetishizing lesbianism. While I admittedly sometimes see lesbian couples mostly focusing on the fact it's two women, that does not make me forget they're still people worthy of respect for who they are. This is especially true with actual people. I have met a few homosexual / bisexual women IRL and I don't see them any differently than hetero ones. I'm not that type of straight guy, you know.
As for the ship itself, I always found myself enjoying the idea of Samus and Peach together instead, probably because of their highly contrasting personalities. It seems cute to me
But Rosalina does make a more reasonable match for the bounty hunter.

...Okay, first of all can I just say that I 100% agree to this? This is practically one of the major reasons why, if I were to commission a pic for a wlw OTP of mine, I would usually avoid commissioning artists who prefer to only draw girls (and those who only draw pairings if it's wlw as well that it's the only LGBT+ pairing they accept/are willing to draw), which to me just makes it seem like they don't even really care that it's a lesbian ship so much as they only just care that...it's two women, which to me just seems downright fetishizing -n-;;
But then again, I suppose people are free to draw what they want....
Funny enough, what inspired me to ship them was that one comic on Tumblr (sadly I don't remember where it is anymore of what the blog name was ;; ) as well as a few posts where Samus and Rosalina interacted. I've always found it cute given how similar they are (both reside/fight across galaxies, hella tall 
I like to think Samus would be a great support figure for the Lumas and she'd be the kind to protect both her wife and their adopted children, while Rosalina's the "softer"(?) one of the two with telling them stories and being the one who greets Samus a "welcome home" kiss after a rough day of work as a bounty hunter~
But aahhh, I'm rambling at this point whoops ;;

I also find it questionable when an artist is only willing to draw lesbian relationships, or if they exclusively draw women. It comes across like an artist only using their work for sexual self-gratification. It gets a bit tricky when the artist is a woman, but when it's a guy drawing all these sexualized women, it doesn't bode well for how I feel he treats women and/or lesbians. I suppose people are free to draw what they want, as you say, but I'm equally free to avoid them.
I can't quite remember when I started shipping Rosalina and Samus, but I want to say it was back in 2012 or 2013. I don't think I got really into the ship until 2014, since I tend to avoid shipping characters who aren't in a game together. I think I may have seen some of the comics you've mentioned on tumblr and they're really well-made. Those may have gotten me back into shipping them, too, since they feel respectful to the characters.
I agree with you about their similarities, since that's primarily why I ship them (though I'd never considered Samus' relationship with the Baby Metroid until your first drawing of them). I could definitely see Samus as being more of a "breadwinner" figure for the family. I think Rosalina's home being a functional spaceship would also be helpful for Samus. Rosalina seems like she'd be ready to help Samus at a moment's notice. And given how powerful she is in Smash Bros., she may be able to fight off big mean aliens alongside Samus.
