Description
“Rise and shine.” Phatra pushed up heavy wooden blinds on the hotel room window, letting the red sunrise flood the room. “Time to get up.”
“Mmmhh.” Lauryn groaned in bed with her face down, syphoning up more of the covers to protect herself from the light’s mild assault. “What the hell...” She rolled over, two blue eyes peeking out from a wedge of blanket to look at the digital clock on her side of the bed. “Nnh, it’s 5am, stop!”
“Yeah, I told you we need to get up early for the market.” The slightly older Thai woman was already putting on her white khaki shorts and picking out a tank top from her luggage from the other side of the bed. Her straight black hair fell nearly to her waist in the back, with a forehead of curled bangs that shaded her short eyebrows.
“I forgot...” Willfully forgot, most likely. “A few more hours?” “It’ll be too hot by then.”
Her girlfriend groaned softly. “What about the night market?”
“No, that is for tourists.” Too crowded and chaotic for Phatra as well; an easy spot for two women to get mugged or worse. The only places Phantra considered safe after dark was indoors dining and the hotel’s pool.
“We are tourists Phatra.” They were both first time visitors to Phitsanulok province, though Lauryn was obviously more of the foreigner as an American expat while Phatra grew up in Bangkok. They both spoke the language, though Lauryn deferred to her girlfriend in more complex social situations. “We’re supposed to sleep in...” Nude except for a loose white bra, the tanned sandalwood skin of Lauryn’s arms slowly lunged out from under the covers to pull the sheet over her head again. The wavey blond hair that sprawled over her neck was dry and tangled from the heat, along with her inconsistent showers.
“Come on, I had this all planned out. I don’t want to do any of it without you.” Phantra sighed, slinging a yellow satchel strap over her shoulder. It was a lost cause at this point, as far as she was concerned. Her need to control their itinerary was obviously not Lauryn’s style, but she didn’t want to waste any of the time they had together either.
“Mmhh, a few more hours won’t ruin anything...” Every detail of their trip was penned out in Phantra’s notebook, but to Lauryn it was just more expectations that she couldn’t meet. Her body refused to leave vacation mode, even if her heart wanted to get up and go. “Plllease? Just go without me, you can bring me back something cool and show pictures.”
“Fine.” She would just treat it like a morning walk then and save anything interesting for the afternoon. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, a little distance might do them good, especially after the stressful conversation of last night. With a cleared head, she’d know the right thing to say. “Promise me you’ll be up by when I come back?”
“Mmhmmmh.” It wasn’t a yes, but it would have to do. Phantra threw the spare room key onto the empty bed space besides Lauryn and left.
It was a short walk to the town market from the hotel near the temple, though going back up the mountainous stairs on the return would be where Phantra would get her exercise. Keeping her purse close to her shoulder, she kept her eyes open for interesting wears. One of the local Buddhist monks with handmade good would be the best bet for something authentic. Most of the sellers were offering local produce, and other necessities of life in the provinces. Phantra briefly chatted with a young woman selling colorful painted rice jars, but then decided against any purchase from her. Lauryn was more interested in trinkets, not a souvenir that she would have to actually get use out of.
Tucked behind a booth selling roasted insect snacks, she found an elderly man with leathery skin and a warn kufi cap sitting cross legged over a blanket, a pile of jewelry and other miscellaneous ornaments splayed out before them. She knelt down on one knee to see if anything stuck out to her, glancing up at the man’s surprisingly toothy smile.
“Oh, looking for gifts?” He spoke in English.
“Sure.” Phantra held her fingers to her chin, just studying the pile before replying back in Thai. “Did you make these?” From the variety of artifacts and ornaments, it was clear that they came from many sources.
“Ah, no these are things I have traded for along my way.” His Thai was rough, likely not a native speaker, and Phantra made no assumptions about a stranger’s origins. “I am on pilgrimage, so money is greatly appreciated, please!”
“Mmhm.” Phantra rose to stand again and move on in her search.
“Wait, perhaps this?” The man held out hand to stop her, grabbing an object from the pile. It was a rectangular charm, only slightly larger than the man’s hand, carved from white granite and shimmering moonstone in the shape of an elephant. “Do you know the story of the Buddha’s white elephant?”
“Uh huh.” She nodded, cautiously taking the charm into her hands. “I do.” It was smooth on the polished core, with rocky sides and tied with a hair woven black cord at the top.
“My apologizes.” He bowed slightly. “It calls to you, if you will take it.”
Phantra resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Still, it was a nice charm, just the type of thing Lauryn would have snapped up without a thought, being the less discerning of the two. “Where is it from?”
“I cannot say for certain. I traded it from a lovesick Baháʼí who said it was made for a woman seeking to bear child. Whether this is true or if the charm was made by his hands, I could vouch for neither, though he told me it can improve fertility.” The man raised an eyebrow to meet Phantra’s frozen stare. “Is that what you seek?”
“Pphhh...” She nearly snorted before shaking loose her momentarily tense expression. “I will take it. How much?”
“A seller cannot be a chooser; I will take what you can give me to continue my journey.” They closed their eyes and held out open palms, upon which Phantra deposited six 100 Bhat bills. “Oh mercy, thank you for this blessing. Put the charm under the pillow of your man when he sleeps and when you dream of a white elephant, then you and he...”
“I get it.” Phantra laughed softly. Just as she thought, the man was no psychic or seer. With another thanks, she took the charm and left. On her way back to the hotel, Phantra doubled back around to
purchase one of those painted rice jars. It was bright blue metal with shiny white detailing, perfect for storing Lauryn’s small and fragile gift for the hike up the temple steps.
When she returned to the rooms, her legs ached and her breathing was plainly labored. The hotel room’s small stovetop was warm with toasted Khanom Pang, bread waffles, on a plate. Besides the stove was a trifolded napkin inked with the words “Breakfast for you ♥” Phantra peaked around the bedroom doorway to see the blinds drawn closed and Lauryn tucked under the covers.
“What am I going to do with you...” She whispered, walking over to where her girlfriend was sleeping soundly. Taking the napkin and pen, she scratched a note into the back side “swimming”, then wrapped the elephant charm in the napkin and slid it under Lauryn’s pillow.
“MMmmmnmm...” Lauryn hummed, rolling her head before going motionless again, except for the deep rise and fall of her chest. Sticking around would only serve to mettle with her, so Phantra left her handbag on top of the unmoved hotel key and quietly departed for the pool.
Soon the sun lost its thin view through the hotel blinds, leaving Lauryn in a dry shade. She turned over in the covers, reaching her shoulder for a sunbeam that wasn’t there anymore. “Nnhhn.” Her hand hit something hard reaching under the pillow, rousing herself awake without opening her eyes. The feeling of the curiously shaped charm made her finally flip over onto her back to set the object on her chest and get a better look at it. The napkin wrapping fell under a cover fold as Lauryn ran her fingers over the opalescent corners of the white elephant in its stone hewn frame. Her eyes closed again, curling up her hands to hold the charm against her chest tightly. It was like a warm rock, the accumulated sunlight seeping into her skin.
Lauryn pulled up her shoulders to slide her body back under the covers again. Her legs stretched out, dropping her heels off the edge of bed frame when before she had been short enough to lay comfortably. She didn’t mind it though, wiggling her nose while turning onto her side. One hand still clutching the charm against her breasts, Lauryn lazily brought her other fingers to her face to itch over her nose. The hard ridge of her nasal bone seemed to soften to her touch, muscle streaming over her upper maxilla and wrinkling the skin under her eyes, as sensitive new tissues bulged out her sinuses. “Ahhh-“ She opened her mouth and scrunched up her nose to sneeze, but the pressure was moving through her cartilage, not her nostrils. The tip of Lauryn’s nose pulled upwards with each gasping twitch from her jaw, her tongue held tensed and helpless while her top lip folded into the underside of her nose.
“GHpphff!” Her flared nostrils released a breathy sneeze, which nearly turned into a piggish grunt. With the fusion of her upper lip and nose, Lauryn’s face now proudly emphasized her upturned snout. The itching feeling of her fingernails caught on the bunched up skin and pulled it forward with each scratch. She opened her eyes just in time to see the effects of her own touch, a thick tube shaped nose that had pulled out from her face by almost an inch. The humble beginnings of her proboscis wiggled between her eyes as Lauryn rose out of the bed and rubbed her forehead. “Whhat?”
After quickly pulling back from her face in shock and dropping the unfamiliar charm, Lauryn cautiously retuned her hands to touch the growing elephant trunk in the center of her face. She paused, with four fingers placed over the flattened surface of her nostrils before the urge to itch her face stuck again. “’NNnnhg.” Lauryn knew this wasn’t normal, that her body was changing, but the new sensations propagating through the nerves of her face weren’t going to stop through just ignoring them. She let out a hopeless whine before giving in and smothering her palms against the underside of her snout, dragging it ever longer and thicker. With each sliding motion, her trunk curved back on itself, folding into a C shape till she was nearly touching her nose against her forehead.
Lauryn’s eyes fluttered as her head hit the backboard of the bed in a futile effort to escape her own curling trunk. “HHnnnnhnn...” She could feel the same stretching feeling happening with her ears, ear drums popping and pulling backwards. Her earlobes flattered out, slipping like fleshy sheets of paper tucked through the gold veil of her hair. Her thighs came together to grab the fold of blankets between her legs, pulling back her hips while her back arched. There was a tail cresting out of her spine, urging her to dig her butt into the pillows and tip her chest forward. Welcomed by Lauryn’s acuminating posture, the tail grew into place from the tip of her coccyx. It twisted and swung between Lauryns’s butt cheeks, making soft slaps against her ass with each swish.
“Ghhaahh!” There was now a keen ache in her front teeth, though Lauryn ignored the pain to keep both of her hands feeding attention to her developing trunk. Her top back molars flattened down, sinking into her gums till they where flush with the roof of her mouth, while her bottom molars did likewise, all but vanishing from the reach of her tongue which had now melded to the floor of her mouth. She couldn’t move her tongue except by opening her jaw, making her mouth feel small and puffy in comparison to the mobility of her snake-like nose. The pain of her front teeth faded into numbness while they pointed forward and grew into foot length tusks which held up her trunk from underneath. Lauryn’s trunk wrapped around the right tusk, gently pulling the elongated teeth apart into an open V.
She flopped onto her side with a moan, then hearing a brittle ‘crack’ from under her shoulder. Suddenly, the pressure that was reshaping her head dissipated, along with the muscular tone of her trunk. “MMhhphhg?” Rising back onto her hands and knees, Lauryn looked down at the stone charm, broken into fragments from her weight. Was that what had caused this? Whatever it was, shattering it seemed to have ended her transformation.
“Ppphhhantra?” Fully awakened, Lauryn hopped of the bed, her overall enlarged figure stumbling against the wall as quickly as she stood. She wasn’t used to being so big, or the feeling of a tail struggling to wiggle its way out of her ass crack.
The trunk which concerned the majority of her face hung loosely onto her chin, requiring one hand to hold it up off her mouth, even though underside of the trunk was now also part of her mouth. Unlike the smooth skin of her cheeks, her trunk was rough and wrinkled. It only erected at her touch or when she concentrated on flexing it, otherwise going right back to sagging between her tusks. She felt like she had to keep her mouth open to breath, as the trunks’ limpness kept cutting off the airflow when it wasn’t held straight.
“Stupphhhid thhhing!” Holding her trunk aloft to keep off her face felt like she was plugging her nose, though now it was getting in the way of her vision. Her free hand searched for the light switch besides the bedroom entrance, and upon finding it, she squinted again and moved into the bathroom. “OOHHWW!” Lauryn yelped in pain, her tusks smacking against the doorframe as she misjudged the size of the bathroom doorway when turning her head. “’Oohhwww!” Now cupping her tusks, she crouched her way into the bathroom to take a look at herself in the mirror.
Well at least she wasn’t grey and wrinkled, retaining her golden wheat colored skin, with the exception of almond tone splotches all over her wide elephant ears. “I’m an eleppphhhant?” That sounded right, and her eyes weren’t deceiving her. Shielding her tusks this time, Lauryn ran back into the bedroom to look for the broken charm. Maybe there was some way to change herself back using that. Her hands sifted through the covers to find the trinket, freeing the napkin which had wrapped it. “Swimming?” This looked like Phandra’s handwriting, and it would explain where her girlfriend left to after leaving this... gift?
Somehow the knowledge that this was Phandra’s doing took a weight off Lauryn’s back. Maybe it was some sort of special blessing, their whole reason for traveling here? Forgetting the matter of the charm itself, she wandered back the bathroom for a second opinion from the mirror.
“I mean... its not bad...” Her ears flapped against her cheeks when she turned her head from side to side. Lauryn smoothed back her ears and then tucked a few locks of her hair over them, like a ribbon bookmark stopping a page from flailing in the wind. The trunk was the most annoying part, but it was mostly just how clumsy she was with it. She had yet to learn how to properly control it, an extended proboscis filled with strange sensations and instincts that Lauryn found unfamiliar. Her cheeks turned red at the thought of her own inexperience, abashedly curling her trunk around her tusks as if to hide it.
There was no questions about her appearance over all, as Lauryn had already mentally accepted that she was an elephant. It was foolish to deny that the tusks, trunk, ears, and tail were all a part of her now. Remembering to check her tail, Lauren looked down at her nude waist. “Righhht...” She needed to put on some clothes at least.
Her bra was uncomfortably tight now, so she stripped it off and put on a sleeveless blue tank top. She tried on a pair of panties, but they were all too small and got in the way of her tail. Lauryn instead took a pair of her larger cargo shorts and put them on backwards, letting her tail hang out from the space of the unbuttoned zipper. “Muchhh better!” Her trunk twitched, bending over toward under her raised armpits. It wasn’t a great smell, but she didn’t need to shower here, not when her mate was already at the watering hole.
Right, they would bath together, spraying Phandra down with water drawn into her trunk. Phandra would return the favor... unless she didn’t have a trunk, though Lauryn laughed a little at the silly idea. Of course, her mate was an elephant just like her. The human part of her mind shifted into the backseat, letting Lauryn’s more urgent elephant instincts fill her thoughts. She needed to reunite with her mate immediately. Going to the watering hole alone wasn’t safe.
While she walked to the door, she slipped off a band from her wrist to tie up her hair. Letting her trunk fall again, Lauryn kept breathing with her mouth closed, as she’d found the spacing of her tusks formed for a small gap where her front teeth used to cover, adding a whistling noise to her every exhalation. The trunk hung limply until Lauryn took in a deep sniff of the hot midday sun, her eyes closed in silent delight at the feeling of how her trunk straightened out when filled with a rush of spiced scents and warm air from the open window.
The smell of Phandra’s sweat was unmistakable, though only slightly more enticing than the much closer smell of a spare waffle on the stove. Lauryn snatched the waffle up by the tip of her nose, using the trunk to push the waffle into her mouth while she opened the door.
