Description
,, I can explain , and idk if I should put a mature warning on this, feel free to drop me a note if I should cover this up i df k,,Okay. I am the absolute best example of doing gritty renditions/retellings of something innocent, so me, being myself, chose TTTE, because it was a big ass part of my childhood.
But you know, recently I've started to realise how fucked up some of it was and,, what happened to Smudger was a big part of that realisation. So go ahead and take this how you will and y'all be thankful that I probably won't be doing anymore humanised TTTE stuff after this, hopefully anyway.
TL;DR: I do not ever want to draw that amount of rust ever again, goddamn.

Truth be told, I actually subscribe to the idea that Smudger still remains at the ruins of the Old Station. This is assuming he wasn't scrapped or sold off with the rest of the Mid Sodor's equipment. If you re watch the episode "Sleeping Beauty" you can see a long black pipe sticking up out of the ruins of the engine shed(though for obvious reasons it can't actually be Smudger since his model was probably repainted back into Rheneas at the time).

Oh my god you can? Jheeze, that's interesting, I never noticed that before, probably because it's been years since I've seen the show or any of the episodes with the exception 'Granpuff' for references and whatnot. Mostly my humanised TTTE stuff has all been concept design related up until a month or so ago, now all of these ideas are popping up and I'm getting more and more into thinking about how their humanised/robot counterparts work.
It would wrench at your heartstrings a little if he were still there though, I don't know the exact date but I'm guessing he would've been converted into a generator in the VERY early years of 20th century? And now it's 2016, God.. He's been there for a good century at least.

If you think that's depressing, his book counterpart was used as a machine to help pump out the mines and eventually broke down. The mine flooded and he was scrapped after. Imagine him being trapped in a flooded mineshaft...
As for when he was converted, I theorized that in the TVS, Smudger would've been converted sometime before Falcon arrived. In the books he(Falcon) came in 1904, but the TVS makes it look like Falcon came after Stuart when The latter wouldn't have arrived for at least 20 more years.

Oh yeah, I know all about Stanley or simply No.2 as he was known, don't you worry, I've actually been thinking about making up a design of him too, I know technically him and Smudger were the same engine but I don't know, they're so different when it comes to how they look, I can't help but see them as two separate engines, so you might see some stuff about him on my page, not sure yet uwu.
That makes sense, it's a little hard to get everything to fall into place since the only date I have when it comes to when Smudger was built is actually 1885, and though that might not be true, I'm holding onto that date for now until I find something else. And what you say is odd because I always thought Falcon and Stuart arrived together, just shows how much research I've done so far, huh? I'm still catching up with that tbh.

Smudger's build date has never actually been confirmed; though I'm assuming this date was given to line up with the time of the MSR's opening, Duke's build date, and the build dates of Rheneas and Dolgoch. LoonyOWL suggested that Smudger was built around that time by Fletcher-Jennings for a cancelled order. If you also line up their dates of construction, you could probably argue that Stanley was actually bought to replace Smudger before he too was taken out of service. Though it might be difficult to come up with an excuse to come up with a reason why Stanley remained an engine as long as he did(assuming he was bought right after the end of WWI and keeping in line with him being converted in 1928)

If Smudger was built in 1885, that would make him only six or so years younger than Duke (who was built in 1879 I believe) which I find pretty cute to be honest, you assume that Smudger's a lot younger than Duke, by a decade at least but if he was built in 1885 he really isn't that much younger, that's part of the reason I'm sticking with that date. I liked LoonyOWL's timeline and the RTL Fanfic in general, really, I was gutted that he took it down.
Here comes the tricky bit for me as with my ideas I'm going to have to fiddle around with some dates (shameful I know) because I would've liked Smudger and Stanley to have met somewhere along the line, I'm not sure how I'm going to do this yet but the overall idea is in my head, as well as the rather painful ideas of what WWI did to Stanley and how it effected his personality, and also how that could've lead to his conversion. Sad stuff.
