If there was one thing Mikayla decidedly didn't really need, it was another jumping-focused horse. So when Siobhan had annoyed her and begged her to the point where she was willing to pull out her own hair, she begrudgingly agreed- so long as Siobhan drove. She was even more irritated when Siobhan hooked up the trailer to Mikayla's green truck, adamantly stating they weren't getting another horse. If Siobhan wanted to drive an empty trailer for two or three hours and come back home driving and empty trailer, that was fine by her.
She was not getting a new horse.
"Look at him! He's gorgeous!" Siobhan gushed as the young rider rode the chestnut stallion around the arena, trotting over poles and the occasional jump. The owner stood by nodding his head, a gleam in his eyes as Mikayla reluctantly scrutinized the stallion.
"He's not bad. He has a decent head, he's a bit thick necked, and not as uphill as most jumpers."
"You say that like that's a bad thing."
"How much did you want for him again?"
"$50,000."
"And he's trained in what?"
"Hunter Jumper, Level two. He's got quite a few ribbons to his name. I bought him off a well known eventing breeder."
"And... who trained him?"
"No one you would know. He's an American legend."
"Try me."
"Clint... Robertson.."
"You mean Clint Anderson."
"Perhaps."
"Okay, we're done." Mikayla stood up from leaning against the fence, wiping off her gloved hands.
"Aww, come on Mik, it can't be that bad."
"We aren't buying a $50,000 broken horse that was started too early in life, is going to go lame in less than 4 years of hard work, a 10 year old who isn't beyond level 3, let alone hasn't vaguely been competed regionally, trained by a man who is known for hitting horses in the face. Like hell am I going to spend 50k on that."
"But Mik!" Siobhan whined, trudging after her, only to stop and stare at the ring as the horse baulked a good few meters before a jump. The saddle was obviously loose, slipping. The young teenager slipped out of the saddle and started yelling at the horse, waving her whip around like a baton- going so far as to strike the stallion's neck and chest- though it was obvious she was going for his raised head.
Mikayla didn't think twice. In a blink of an eye she was over the fence, had yanked the reins and the whip out of the little girl's hands and was speaking to her in a very soft voice, the fury evident on her face. The blonde teenager yelled at Mikayla- made to grab the whip from her hands while trying to punch her in the face. Mikayla was having none of it. She firmly grabbed the teenager's arm- the one that was trying to punch her, stood up and walked her and the horse to the owner who's face was buried in his hands.
"You're hurting me! I'm gonna tell my mom and she's gonna sue you!"
"Your mother is going to be lucky that she won't face jail time or perhaps both of you being prohibited from ever touch an animal again at this point." Mikayla spoke softly, letting go of the girl's wrist once the were at the fence. The teenager glared at the owner.
"Daddy, do something!"
"I..." He flinched, trying to find the words.
"I'll give you 900 for him, and you'll be lucky if I don't press charges of animal cruelty, or do a little extra research and have you shut down." Mikayla's eyes narrowed in on the owner, while the teenager gaped looking between the two. Slowly, the owner of the barn nodded, much to the anger and tantrumming of his red-face daughter.
"Siobhan, take him to the trailer- set their tack and wraps to the side. Mr. Smith and I need to discuss some things, like signing over ownership and the papers."
Siobhan nodded and quickly did as she bade.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn't until Mikayla was home that her temper has calmed, only to flare again as they took the stallion out of the trailer and to the quarantine barn. It was obvious that despite the food he had been given- the stallion was in relatively poor condition. There were rub marks on his tail where they'd left it up for too long, the leg wraps had been too tight leading to swelling when blood flow returned to the areas. His mouth was torn up, some minor scratches on his shoulder and neck where he'd been hit by the whip, and quite a few gouges in his flank where the girl's spurs had dug into the side. He was also obviously sore on his back where the saddle had been too small, the blanket too thin.
"What a fucking shame." Mikayla mumbled as she gave the horse a bath and rubbed a gentle anti-septic cream into his wounds. There wasn't much she could do for his mouth except give it time.
"I'm sorry Mik, I had no idea." Siobhan said as she readied the stall.
"It's not your fault, heck we probably just saved him from the glue factory or more abuse." Mikayla gently rubbed the stallion's ears. He seemed very calm about the entire thing, though Mikayla wondered if that was just shock.
"Do you think he'll still show?"
"Who knows. We'll see what a year or two of light to no work will do for him, then I'll see about retraining him. His form over the jumps weren't bad, just had a poor rider with an even shittier attitude."
