NEW PIXEL AV TUT WTFOMGLOLBANANA*couldn't figure out how to add a preview image* :/ Sorry about its massiveness
This is kind of a remake of this one: [link] because I made that tut like... last year after I made my first ever public avatar and well... I really didn't have the skills down yet (not saying I do now - but I certainly do more than I did then!). So this one was done entirely in MS Paint and it doesn't mess with any confusing stuff about layers!! I'll save those details for a seperate tut ;D

I'm not sure if there's a place that will do it for you. I think you need a program for it.

if i wanna start out with a completely original pic for my avvie, do i start with 50x50 pixel canvas? or is it better to start big and then resize it afterwards???

Start small; finish small. Just zoom in!
It's soooo much easier.
And if you're animating it; keep the base image simple!
