Description

How long has it been since she had a fresh kill? Moons perhaps? Zira looked down beside her to her small son. Everything she caught she gave to him while lowering herself to a scavenger, eating whatever decaying meat she stumbled upon or scared vultures away from.

"Mommy..."

A small voice hoarsely whispered from the cub. Ducking down, she lifted him into her mouth and kept a steady pace into the noon heat.

He cocked his eyebrows at the view below him. A lone lioness trekking through 'his' land; while the land he occupied was not his by law, the owner rarely ventured that far out of his kingdom to chase the rogue away. With a spit into his paw and brushing his hair into a neat little pompadour, he stalked down the hill to confront her.

"Oh Lioness! Lioness!"

Zira turned her head to the sound and spotted an ageing male. Her hackles raised as she prepared to fight for her and her son's safety.

"No need for the hostility," he chuckled as he spotted the cub in her mouth, "I wouldn't dare hurt a mother and her son." He could barely contain the disdain at the revelation of the cub accompanying her, but he would make do with this setback. Quick head tossed behind him, the older lion pointed to his small living area.

"I have water and shelter at my den that I'm willing to share. A mother and son shouldn't have to suffer in this heat."

Glowering at the male, Zira quickly turned her eyes to where he gestured before continuing to study the lion before her. He was certainly older, much older than her, and looked uncannily like herself. A relative? she thought as she set her son down.

"Mommy, can we go with the kind lion? I'm thirsty."

His eyes pleaded to his mother to accept the invitation. His mouth was dry, his pelt was hot, and the thought of water and a cool resting place sounded heavenly.

"Ah!" Exclaimed the older male. "I forgot to introduce myself. Amani is the name, and yourself?"

"...Zira and this is Kosa."

"Hello, mister!"

"Please, follow me. I'll catch you some lunch and have your fill of water at my place, I must insist."

Zira glanced down at her son then back at where the lion claimed he lived; if she squinted, she could spot a small pond of water with an equally small den.

"Alright. We'll go."
