Assignment 14: Trick Training

After a week of being stall bound, Speranza was moved back to the observation paddoc that she had resided in when first arriving at Rose Thorn. After an inspecion by Tori Toro, Flight was told that her hoof was well on its way to being completely healed. During her healing time, Flight had been researching several different tricks and training methods. He had continued his practice of hanging out with her and reading daily, and when she moved to the paddoc he decided it was time to start trick training.

He had tried a few different tricks with his lesson horse, Oreo, who didn't seem to take too kindly to strange manouvers at first but quickly warmed up to them. He was by no means ready to run off with the circus to show off his tricks, but he was good enough that Flight felt confident about training Speranza, but he went for a simple trick to begin with: the hug.

Flight had cut up several carrots in preperation and went to the paddoc, where Speranza was chomping away at grass with Di and Njáll was perched on the fence watching them. After an incident with a particularly grumpy horse in the paddoc, the puppy knew better than to enter the observation paddoc, but it was obvious he was itching to jump in there with his friends. After greeting all three properly, Flight began training. He gave her a chunk of carrot straight off so she would know he had something yummy that she wanted. Then he took out another chunk and held it over his shoulder. When Speranza started reaching towards it, he lowered the carrot down by his opposite hip, and her head followed. He gave her the treat, praised her, and then they did it again. And then again. The next time, expecting the trick, Speranza immediately took started going for his hip without going over the shoulder and Flight made a disapproving noise and took the carrot away. Not wanting to end on a bad note, Flight tried it again and this time she went over the shoulder.

After that, they took a break from the training. Flight read a chapter in his in book, Di departed from the paddoc to go and see the group of little girls who came to Rose Thorn for lessons and snuck him peppermints, and Speranza sneezed and then wiped her nose on Njáll, pretinding that she was giving him affection rather than covering him in horse snot and drool.

Then back to the training. As soon as Flight put the book down and went up to her, she starting nosing at his pockets for the treats. After some scolding and pushing her nose away from the precious carrots, the training went well. He started giving her the carrot every other time, and then switched to just praise and pats. They took a break. He introduced the voice que, and she picked that up rather well, and by then it was nighttime. He brought her dinner, and then left her for the night.

The next day he recapped what they had done yesterday and Speranza was great. Flight went about his chorse, stopping by every so often to work on the hug a bit more, and by the end of the week Speranza was able to give out hugs on cue.
