Most characters Shusterman writes aren't indecisive in personality and motive and I think that's incredibly refreshing.
After reading the Divergent trilogy, the hunger games trilogy, matched, and all the other borderline-shitty YA stuff thats super popular now, its good to see books featuring characters who know who they are.

He was put in last minute as a love interest for Jill and she clearly wasn't interested. He perpetuates the idea that if a guy pursues you after rejection then it's romantic. A lot of the relationships are kinda anti-female, like nick has the duty of saving Mary and mike is whipped by Allie.
Plus I found him to be extremely creepy with all that almost-beastiality crap. And the audiobook does no favors for him because he sounds massively weird out loud.
That's just my take. He and milo are my least favorite characters, but I respect milo enough to at least draw him xD

Ah, okay, that's a fair point. They are young ghosts stuck in their ways though, so maybe that might kind of explain the interactions?
Yeahh, he was a bit overly obsessed with jaguars. Oh gosh, I guess that's a good reason for me not to listen to audio books.

So what did you think of Mary then? After all she's done? I think she's a very interesting character, and I kind of respect how she refuses to deviate from what she views as right but she goes way off the deep end.

I have more reasons for not liking him too, I just haven't read the books in a while, and I guess all that stuck with me was "creepy cat-junky weirdo" Like the way he would introspect would just give me the jeebs, and I only think he got put there because any well liked character "deserved a partner", like, the fanbase responded well to Jill so Shusterman cooked up a reward for her so she could be happy and fulfilled later on. Maybe that wasn't the intended message, but it all felt very forced to me. I love the books, but some parts were a bit problematic. Like the involvement of the hindenburg or the twin towers, or Zin being a confederate soldier, but mostly, I feel like the author did a really good job justifying those things and turning the wheel from SUPER OFFENSIVE to only slightly offensive but believable. In a ghost reality, that is.
I respect the "stuck in their ways" observation. Like when you die and become a ghost, you are who you are when you died forever, but Nick kinda disproves that, don't you think? He did a lot of growing in Everlost, so either he's the exception to the rule, or Jix is creepycatjunkyweirdo and has no excuse for being how he is.
The audio books are wonderful (especially when Allie possesses a bunch of people at once, that sounds a m a z i n g in the audio), its Jix's characterization that freaks me out. And in the third book there are a lot of not-so kid friendly themes in there, I was surprised that it was a tween book anyway.
OOOOOHHHH MARY. I love her, and I respect her so much as a villain. She's the tv trope of the wife you dont want to piss off and all the boys love and fear her. Everyone who respects her are head over heels and even the people who don't like her, love her. Apart from her AWESOME personality, shes compassionate, kind, manipulative, insane, and has a raaaaging god-complex. She feels like she can rebuild the world better than it is, and if that isn't hubris, I don't know what is. I dont agree with what she did, or how she did it; I dont agree with how she decided to go, or what she did to Milo, or how she handled Nick and his army or the bomb or anything, but I love her boldness. She's a great character, and I love me some great characters.

I can see how you'd get that. I dunno, I never really got that sense, I mean, yeah it's weird, but I personally thought he has some decent qualities too. Though now that you mention it, I definitely have more of an issue with the Jix x Jackin' Jill thing than I did before.
I'd tend to believe that Nick is an exception to the rule of "you don't change" except for the fact that Mikey and even Allie did change over the course of the books. It probably more depends on the Afterlight than anything else. Some might be more prone to getting stuck in ruts of behavior all across the board than others.
Oh gosh, I'd love to hear how the skin-jacking-juggling sounds, that definitely seems like something that would be improved through audio. I've never really listened to audio-books, but I could see how it'd impact your perception of different events and especially characters.

There is something really charming in the characters, only a few pictures of them made me read the books. In a week or two I'll get my scanner working and submit some of my fanart.

I have to say he is an idiot for trying to fall in love with major female characters in what I call the Expanded Shusterman Universe (this trilogy plus Unwind, which takes place about a century later)
Important lesson: NEVER mess with any major female charcaters (no matter which side they are on) in that universe. Never works out.

Unrelated, but I love how shusterman doesnt do love triangles so much like "woe is me what do i do i love two boys" but more like "i know who i am and i know what i feel. One im in love with, the other is a little creepy but well meaning enough for me not to be a dick to him" basically xD

I'm writing an Expanded Shusterman Universe and that pattern of "unless you're their soulmate don't even think about it type of girls" continues.
The idea is that Unwind takes place a century after the events in the trilogy (the details from the story would put it at about that date-the Heartland War was three generations before the story, and that was a few decades after the trilogy ended). And there will be a huge backstory on the real reason behind unwinding, one involving Allie (and the reason she can be involved will be explained)
Remember the question "what happens to an unwound skinjacker"? I'm going to answer that question.
