In Art Direction class we have as a project to pick a time and place and research them, then draw a set.

I picked Heian period Japan. That's roughly from the 9th century to the 13th. That's when Japan really came into its own as a culture separate from China, kana was invented, Genji Monogatari was written...

The interesting thing about the period is that because men wrote in Chinese but women were not taught it, the bulk of the Japanese literature from that time was written by women.

So here's my try at a court lady wearing juuni hitoe, drawn without reference in class while I was bored.
