you know, it kinda saddens me that many people think inklings and octolings would breed like humans, apes, or any other placental mammals. but in reality, they are just bipedal evolved land dwelling mollusks that just so happen to look humaniod.

so here's a thing i gotta say about eggs.

inklings and octolings produce a single large egg (well except for blue ring octolings, they often produce two tiny eggs at once) the production of the egg takes 3 months, but during that time the egg is forming, the lil squishie has already developed quite alot before the egg is laid however at this stage of devolpment, the tentacles have formed but have not seperated from the body yet and the lil baby inside is barely consious but is still aware of it's surroundings. and the process of laying this large egg is painful (well except for blue rings, their tiny eggs aren't that much of a problem) but once the egg is laid it still needs 3 more months of development before the lil baby hatches, during this time the parents take care of it. also to note octarian eggs are round while inkling eggs are pointed at the ends and is alittle on the slender side. oh also the baby will most likely inherit the color of one of the parents, but in rare cases it's a mix of the two.
oh also the ancestors of inklings have borrowed the parenting behavior from the ancestors of the octarians, squids aren't the best of parents, they just lay their eggs and leave, where as the octopus will care for its eggs untill it starves to death.
the only squid so far (in our modern day) that has been noted to care for their young is the Gonatus onyx

so here's two random inkling characters who are proud parents of their new lil egg.
