Description
December 2007Okay, this is my initial manga style sketch of David one of my main characters in the Bible Stories Manga I am talking about.
As opposed to some comics version where they put a kid David I see David as a teenager just like most anime heroes around.
I need/want a more general anime character design style that most readers can identify with, easily jumping into the graphic presentation of this unpopular and noncommercial subject.
This design is a mixture of my previous influences like Street Fighter, Chrono Trigger, Ninja Scroll & LOTR.
David is ruddy, handsome, rugged, young warrior who loves to sing and dance too ^_^ so I put a smirk in his lips and a sharp nose because he likes to stick it on so many none of his businesses
He was told a braggart by his elder brothers who became envious of him.
I will try my best to present him true to the Bible as a real person & at same time convincing to those who believe him as a legendary character only.
God willing I hope everything works out fine.

My only advice is to darken his skin a bit.
(Since middle eastern men don't usually look so pale.)

first I was predjuced by some ugly christian manga images before, but I think you really got a good idea here! And to my surprise, I really like your David
Mostly because of is facial expression and the fringes on his clothes and boots..it gives a feeling of energetic youth and juvenile power. Also like is roman-like boots..especially them
Also like the idea of merging anime and biblical stories together..one question: Isnt it too complicated to satisfy the need for the biblical truth AND the legendary theory?

What a lovely comment you have shared with yours truly. You have showered me with so many insights.
These details just comes from my heart. I have read the book of Samuel and Psalms so many times David became part of my life.
Like the Word of God is so alive and relevant today to me well so is David. And most of the time I put my self in his shoes as if I was there during his time and I see so many things all of a sudden in the place where he existed.
Q: Isn't it too complicated to satisfy the need for the biblical truth and the legendary theory?
A: 1. NO, my friend. Nowadays we can see, people will believe anything especially myths and legends that the king of this world used to mislead people from the BIBLICAL TRUTH which now has become a LEGEND to many people, talk about backfire! And that is the weakness, a hole in the present system of this world where a tiny servant of the LORD should go right into to an spread out the BIBLICAL TRUTH.
2. Its about RELEVANCE. David is a human being like every one of us and his story as a human being is relevant.
I Corinthians 2:11 says For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?
People can relate to his story because his situation back then spiritual, social, political, religious, economical is repeated today.

I can totally see him as an anime/manga character, but not so much as King David.... I guess he is younger here, maybe around when he is going to soon slay the Giant.

I don't know if he was a red head, but hey its anime. I did some draft work on david myself but he ended up looking a little too girly.....But his whole disgne looks right especaily the robes. keep it up.

I find this picture interesting. When I first saw it, I went all "He looks like Crono from Chrono Trigger! 
He turned out quite well, I'd say. The colors are pleasing for my eyes as well.
A tiny mistake I've noticed is with the hand holding the rod/staff(?), it looks a bit odd.

Bruce Lee once said that "we should absorb what is good for ourselves and leave the ones that are bad for us"
In art I consider my favorite influences as the "good".
So they become part of me from which I draw out what I want to do.
And I mix them all up to come up with art that I feel good with.
My weakness...I find it hard to project in my mind the outcome of anything.
I have a creative deficiency because of poor memory so mixing my influences is my way of creation where I come up with something different anyway.
The inking in David's fist is incomplete, sorry about that.

The inks seem a bit sloppy, but since the issue here is the character design itself, that's not entirely important. I think he came out well, and my only question is if belts back then had anything resembling buckles, or were even belts so much as a tie-on thing.

I did this raw sketch in few minutes time drawing on pure instinct and FEEL of the character's idea and basic design.
I drew the belt this way because I found out that military technology during biblical times were amazingly "not that old".
