Philippine History
In the late 1990's when when the American Comics Wave died down, the Anime Phenomenon hit the Philippines like a storm! It was the time for a career change for moi so I ventured to doing manga in our country. So I approached Atlas Publication Co. a traditional publisher using 1960's print technology. Fortunately they wanted to give my style a try. So I was surprised to know they want to give me my own and first full pledged manga title.
Having no knowledge in manga/comics or basic principles of visual arts like layout and composition etc., I embarked in a one man manga project. Story, script, layout, pencils, inks and colors were all done by me. It took me a month to finish my first manga. I was excited but not so satisfied with it coz it looked so amateur. I suggested an authentic manga experience in black and white print but they did not approve of it. And worse the printing of the manga sucked so bad I almost cried when I saw the first hard copy!
Anyway, 15,000 copies were printed for nation wide distribution, a fist of its kind in the history of manga in the Philippines, and ironically it was well received by unsuspecting and unassuming Filipino youth despite the poor print quality. Maybe it was something totally new or different or the readers didn't care whether it's good or bad they just wanted something new....I don't know until today.
Tons of fan mail flood the office but unfortunately I wasn't allowed to read any of them and thank them readers. Suck fest again.
Although Exyton was a hit Atlas Publishing didn't know how to treat their customers right up until now and that is very sad.
We had a mecha design contest to promote and encourage readers to get involved with the project and I chose the winners (I thought they were fantastic some entries drew better than me!) ... but who did the management published in the next issue as the winner?- the stick robot drawing of the company owner's five year old grand child.
That dragged everything down!
I knew lots of the readers were pissed right off and flat out disappointed, I am very sorry my friends that it happened specially for the winners.
It was a very rocky start for me as a manga artist in the 90s
and the same unfortunate events plagued the Filipino manga scene up until today, prohibiting local manga to ever make it into the mainstream reading public.
But good news my heart will go on and in the right time and place this dream of mine will come true! XD
More to come.....

So why are you venturing into manga?
Does this have anything to do with agriculture?
Is this business for local or overseas publication?
Is manga a profitable business there in the Philippines or are you putting this up for outsourcing?
I used to be a manger in Glasshouse Graphics Asia that's why I am asking a lot of these questions. Thanks.
