Description A beautiful day, even if you're a giant.

Done for the amazing THE NINE WORLDS CONTEST at for the world Jotunheim.

From norse-mythology.net/the-nine-w… :

"Jotunheim is separated from Asgard by the river Iving, which never freezes over. It lies in the snowy regions on the outermost shores of the ocean. Mimir's well of wisdom is in Jotunheim, beneath the Midgard root of the ash tree Yggdrasil. The stronghold of Utgard is so big that it is hard to see the top of it. And there the feared Jotun king Utgard-Loki lives. Utgard is carved from blocks of snow and glistening icicles."

So uhm... yeah, Utgard's stronghold is made of ice and all that... and mine isn't. What can I say... this is what I saw or what I felt in the moment I went for it and it's what came out. Certainly not as cold a place as it's probably supposed to be, but I guess we can just call it the er... Mediterranean version? Hah.

Another thing I had to consider was whether the giants are supposed to be gigantic in their world, or otherwise their world was made to fit their size. I've seen representations of the giants being huge compared to nature, but to me it doesn't make much sense that a world made for them would not have the according size, so I went with that. I also added the rainbow at the end as a symbol of the bridge between the nine worlds.

Other than that, happy with how it looks but I just spent far too long on this.

You're most welcome. All points I've ever gotten were given to me by other deviants. Besides getting core, all other points I've had I have given away and plan to keep doing the same, they came from the community and it just makes sense they should go back to it and those who are making it what it is.

great job with the castle, excellent lighting, nice foreground-background separation... I can be picky, but I wouldn't find a single thing to complain about. A wonderful piece overall!

Wow thank you so much Erik!! I learned from the best. I appreciate your words very much.
I could tell you a few things that are wrong though haha... For instance the river goes clearly downhill while the water reflections make it look like static water. ...But at some point I just had to stop working on it lol.

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2016-02-12 16:04:41 +0000 UTC]

haha, you must be kidding!
I guess you're even pickier than I am, but either way I think some design choices are preferable over 100% realism.

Rowye In reply to ErikShoemaker [2016-02-12 17:16:27 +0000 UTC]

True that, you have to make some compromise with realism or else it can get boring and still not look real anyway...
But yeah I'm quite picky specially with my own work. If I see something wrong I can't leave it be. This was easily 50 hours though and I just had to say enough at some point... Think I probably need more practice with easier stuff so when I try to do the epic stuff it goes much smoother.

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2016-02-13 19:13:44 +0000 UTC]

My problem is more the not knowing if something is wrong. If it's obvious I'm happy to spend the extra hour, but sometimes I just keep staring at it and end up needing someone else to tell me what's wrong.

Rowye In reply to ErikShoemaker [2016-02-19 16:05:33 +0000 UTC]

So true. If there's a mistake in one's art is usually cause one can't see it. If I see a mistake I'll go and fix it, the ones I can't see are the ones I really need to work on, the others I'm already trying and it's just about time and practice... Eye practice seems much more complicated to me. :s
