I really loved those gost stories and magazines as a kid and teen, too.
The most famous were the "Gespenster Geschichten // Ghost stories":

The anatomy is kinda hard to make out.
I think the problem is that the shadows have blended the two center characters together. You could use the rim lighting to help distinguish between one body and another. It also seems weird that the light on the cross doesn't affect the lighting around it that much. It looks pretty bright, but it's not reflecting on that many places.
