A typical Irish folk legend, the Merrows are mermaids with green scales and hair, with females being beautiful and delicate and males with sharp teeth and large red noses. Like many other legends about mermaids and aquatic nymphs, Merrows are able to attract sailors with their singing, wearing their magic hat called Cohuleen Druith, which they use to venture between deep water and dry land. If the hat is stolen, the Merrow is unable to move between the two worlds, trapped on dry land or water.

As their appearance is so well described, I did not want to escape much of the original purpose of the Merrows, using the colors of a perch, a fish native to several European rivers.
