Description
Acrylic on Canvas, 11" x 14" Completed 4/2008This is the number 2 painting in a series of small paintings I think of as my "Cities of Glass" or "Fungal Cities"
These paintings are small, but not "tiny"; 8" x 10" & 11" x 14". However, I consider them to be Miniatures because of the minute detail I put into them.
Some info for you Artists; I wear several different magnifying glasses when I paint these. I start with standard magnification glasses with a 250 power, and move all the way up to Jeweler's goggles with a magnification power of 700%. In between I switch from #3, #4, #5, and the #7's for the finest details. I used "script" or "liner" brushes, very slender and long. I go as low as size 0018! (made by Loew-Cornell series #7350)
These are also experiments in subtlety. My earlier work is well known for blatant imagery. Now, I desire to make some paintings that will allow the viewer to project their own interpretation into them. I no longer feel the need to bash people over the head with my art. I find it more challenging and satisfying to trigger imaginations.
This one is purely aesthetic. It is meant to provoke feelings of "other worldliness" and a little mystery as to what is actually going on in this microcosmic environment.
The idea for the sleeper in the bubbled top boat came to me when I dreamed that my bed was floating in the water while I had a fishing pole and my line in the water.

You should've added an extra moon. Very surreal and dark otherwise, good job!

Thank you! Well, I thought of this place as Earth. So, only one moon occurred to me.

This is so incredibly interesting! I'm currently writing my ninth novel - they're all gay S/F / Fantasy adventures. Number nine is about a boy who paints miniature pictures using a large square magnifying glass! You can imagine the jolt I got when I read how you do yours!
Naturally, this painting is an instant fav, and you are on my list to receive a D/L copy of the book once I've finished it. Don't hold your breath though, because it's only up to p63 at the moment, and the adventures haven't even started!

It is interesting that you are using the magnifying glasses and jewler's goggles. I have been wanting to aquire some of these for a while now but I'm having a hard time finding them. Also I am not sure of what strengths I would need.
Now, the following is only personal opinion, of course, and know that I have been a long time and big time fan of yours. I would love to have one of your works if I could afford it (or many of them actually). But here is the thing: I have never felt that you were bashing me over the head at all! To the contrary the thing I have loved about your work, and the thing I look for in any art, is its ability to trigger my imagination and to inspire. Some artists give it to you with no open ends, simply decorative or obvious in content and style. I have never considered your work to be that way. However, I must admit that I have been less fond of your more recent work. It wouldn't surprise me to know that they sold better, and that in itself does not denigrate them in the least. And it is not necessarily the, I'm not sure the word I should use here, perhaps "brutality" of the previous work that attracts me. But they did tend to take me into unknown worlds (or something like that) that I am not getting out of stuff like this particular painting. I find it less subtle than a bit banal. But if this is the direction you are currently more compelled to go in, I am sure you will make good of it. More power to ya, follow your bliss, and all that stuff. I will still be watching for your stuff, as always!!

I appreciate your words. and am honored by your attention. Especially considering your Great Talent. I was amazed when I went through your gallery. Really some astounding works! I fav'ed many. My favorite pieces are the ones that have the most impact in your gallery.
For me, I follow where my life takes me. Every day that I can paint or do art or write or ... well, Every day above ground is a GREAT day. I hope no more mind smashing controversy enters my life and compels me to paint my drama. I have had enough drama.
So, time will tell.
Thank you!

Your welcome and I'm glad you like it, I was going to change it soon as my styles evolved since I made him 3 years ago, but after you saying that maybe I'll hold on for a little bit longer.
