Description For Mermay I wanted to practice my painting skills, and since I don't have time to make a piece per day, I decided to make them weekly based on figures from the brazilian folklore as a way fro peoplee to learn more about them. This is the first one, based on the folktale of Naiá the Water Lily, made by me and RT.
Btw, you'd like to know more about brazilian folklore, this is the tale that the piece was inspired by:

"Once in a while, Jaci, the Moon God and guardian of the plants, would come down to Earth looking to fell in love with young virgin women. Those who he choose would come back with him to the night skies and become stars, always at his side.

Upon knowing of that, Naiá, a beautiful indian from the tupi-guarani wished to become a star and fell in love with the Moon. Due to her beauty, Naiá was constantly courted by other men and warriors, but no matter how many marriage proposals, she rejected all of them as she knew her heart belonged to Jaci.

Every night, all night long, Naiá would come out to watch the Moon in the sky, hoping that Jaci would come down to finally accept her at his side. But it never happened.

She couldn’t accept it and kept trying, her love became an obssession and she would not give up. Every morning she would run towards the horizon to the opposite direction of the Sun, in hopes to meet Jaci at the end. Everyday she kept running and running, only to collapse on the ground due to exhaustion.

After weeks of trying to reach the Moon, she finally succumbed to illness. But even then, despite her being as weak as she was, she proceeded her pursuit. One night, she stumbled upon a pond with the reflection of the Moon on it. The reflection was so bright and seemed so real that Naiá was convinced that Jaci was right then and there bathing in the water.

The naive girl leaned over to deliver a kiss to what she thought was her beloved, but instead she fell through the reflection and was met by the cold, black water. Too weak to swim, she drowned and sank into the darkness, never to see the night sky again.

Jaci watched the event from the skies and felt sorry for the young woman, deciding to fulfill her wish. However she would not become a star as the other girls, instead, the Moon God transformed her into a water lily, giving origin to a new plant. Naiá became the star of the water, and although she would dance with Jaci’s reflection and, in a way, be forever at his side, she would never trully be with him."
