Description

"Pirarucu was a fearful and skilled warrior, known through the land for never losing a battle in his life and for single handedly defeating many men at once. He was filled by pride and vanity, loving no one but himself.

He was the son of Pindaró, a tribal chief from the Nawa people, and although his father was kind and generous, Pirarucu was nothing alike. Malicious and despicable, Pirarucu had no regards towards other people’s lives, going as far as deliberatly killing others from his own tribe when his father was away, just for his own entertainment. His heart was wicked and sellfish.

The man also had no respect for the gods. Believing to be superior to them, he often challenged and insulted their power. One day, Tupan, the God of Thunder and creator of the world, upon observing Pirarucu’s arrogance for a long time, had enough of him and, together with Polo, the God of the Wind, and Iururaruaçu, the Goddess of Torrents, decided to punish the warrior.

Pirarucu was fishing in the Tocantins River when the gods decided to pursue their ambush. Seemingly in an instant, the sky was filled by the most powerful storm mankind has ever seen. Lightning struck the ground, setting a fire that could be seen from the entire forest. The winds so fast, trees went flying. The waters from the river so strong, they invaded the land.

However, Pirarucu was not frightened, much for the contrary, he laughed at the gods in an ironic smile. He went back to fishing with a smug expression and merely ignored their rath.

Tupan became furious, the sky now was entirely lit by his thunders. No longer able to keep fishing, Pirarucu in all his pride decided to fight the storm, but, despite his strength, was no match. The warrior got exhausted.

Although no longer being able to fight, Pirarucu refused to accept defeat and kept challenging the gods. Upon that, a tree fell onto his face, flattening it. Soon after he was struck by a lightning wich set his body ablaze. The agonizing man then was taken by the water into the depths of the river.

Yet, the gods were not done still. They decided to make his punishment eternal. Pirarucu was transformed into a fish. The creature had a flat head that originated from the injure caused by the tree that fell onto his face, while its scales were created from the fire that burned its skin, giving it a black and red color. The name of the fish is Arapaima, or as it’s known in portuguese, Pirarucu.”
