Ha! I love how you flick on to this image, look at the focal point and then suddenly take in the dog and it boosts it to a whole new level.

How can someone be THIS good? Your talent and skill are beyond belief. Is there any chance you make a tutorial on how you achieve such fantastic quality in your paintings? I've downloaded them all, and I've observed them, but can't seem to figure out how you do it. Of course, it's your unique style and I'm not trying to copy it, but learning new techniques has helped me tremendously over the years.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful work!

Just out of curiosity, are there any things in particular that you find difficult to figure out? Because I've spent a lot of time staring at his work as well and I feel like I've understood some things, but of course not nearly everything. But I'd be curious to hear if there are any particular aspects of his painting that make you wonder how he does them?

As I said, I've observed all the paintings, and I can't figure out how he achieves the incredible 3D effect especially in the accesories the characters wear. All the crisp edges, the perfectly positioned elements... Do you think he uses a 3D program? It's my turn to be curious: what have you found out? I really want to learn.

Hmm, I see! I don't think he uses 3d in his works, if you've seen the process gif of this piece for example, or the process video on his YouTube, it seems to be he paints from scratch and if I recall correctly, he said he doesn't like 3D as much as 2d. I'm sure the fact he did 3d modeling professionally for 7 years has definitely helped him with the depth in his pieces. It's one of the reasons I think all 2d artists should do 3d as well, even if just very little, it's probably going to help.

Another thing that probably makes his work look more 3d is the perfect shading. And I mean that lol, basically all the shading in the different tones of color and in general, the shadows are very clean and positioned very believably throughout. He also tends to use more lightsources from different directions (even if very subtle) which I think creates a believable feeling that the character is standing right there "confirmed by the surroundings and their lights". And speaking of lights, he uses bounce light pretty much everywhere, and on every fabric and form, but it's especially noticeable when looking at her chest armor, for example. Oh, and when it comes to the items, I think the fact they're often next to a super black shadow, and in general have greater contrast, helps them stand out as separate objects, that's what I see from the sword as well as the belt and the shoulderpiece. On the characters themselves, the shadows are rarely as dark.

I think good composition (like you said, perfectly positioned elements) is something that has to be learned over time, although of course there are technical rules to that as well, as I'm sure you know. He has of course been doing this for a very long time, but he also is notable for spending a LOT of time on each painting, for example in a video he would talk about spending over a year on a piece when he just had to keep fixing the elements in the painting and he wasn't happy with the composition, and so on. That's some perfectionism!

What I've learned from his paintings only just recently is the magic of textures, (and please Ruan Jia correct me if I'm wrong here!) basically it seems like everything he paints is actually a super small line (or he paints super small lines on top of the painting, I assume) because when you look at them close they seem to consist of a very fine texture rather than big brushstrokes. Of course some backgrounds are like that but for example in this painting the character looks like every inch of her has been drawn with very fine lines. I think that allows for greater variation in colors and tones, and increases the feeling of 3d and believable textures and shading because it is so subtle that you wouldn't even notice it but it makes a big difference in the end. It's quite interesting to me because usually people talk about using rough brushstrokes to create texture instead of, for example, "drawing every strand of hair" - but that's exactly what we see in his paintings!

But yeah honestly I think the most important factor in his paintings is probably the light and shadow usage, it's just incredibly good and plays a big part in making things look 3d. I just checked this painting out in black and white and indeed, there is such a massive contrast used overall, the darkest shadows are super dark, and the lightest tones are basically white, but absolutely most of the colors fall inbetween.

This is just some of my thoughts about it, though. I really wish there was more information about his techniques in English!

You are too kind! Thank you very much for the detailed comment. I agree with you. But the perfection made me suspicious.
Your pictures are good too.
Thank you again! If I find out more, I'll write to you.
