Description
The star and stripe design is based on the national flag of the United States, with the five stripes here representing the five nations which have controlled all or some of the territory which is now Alabama - Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederacy and the United States. The single white star of the Bonny Blue flag which historically flew over the southern part of Alabama is in the canton. The colours of the flag reinforce the five nations theme as they are also present in the flags of those five nations, while also symbolising Alabama's nicknames of the "Heart of Dixie" (red), the "Yellowhammer State" (yellow) and the "Cotton State" (white).
