2012 Shredder, Utrom Shredder/Ch'rell and the 1990 Shredder are all light-years above him.

If I had to pick just ONE Shredder to be my favorite, I like the 2012 series the most. Ch'rell is a close 2nd, just because of his ruthlessness and his bad-ass voice

cooool
Mirage: the one who started it all; even though he died in the first issue, he came back as a clone twice (once as human and once as a shark).
80s: the incompetent whiny 80s villain (like the original Cobra Commander and Skeletor), although he got more threatening as the series progressed near the end; Uncle Phil (RIP) was perfect for the role
90s film: I love how they gave him the comics look in the first and the cartoon look in the second; the Super Shredder battle should've been better, but he's still a threat.
2003: Utrom Shredder almost did what no other Shredder did: he nearly destroyed reality itself (Turtles Forever). Tengu Shredder should've been handled better, but I digress. Cyber Shredder....at least they kept the same voice for the entire series.
2012: Kevin Michael Richardson as the Shredder (what more can you ask for). I also like how he doesn't always fight the turtles personally, and when he does, they get their butts kicked. That being said, the twist with Karai was a little farfetched.
2014 film: The armor was a little bit of an overkill (Super Shredder much?), but he was still badass. Plus, we haven't seen the last of him (unless Eric Sacks dons the armor in the next film).

My personal opinions of Shredders that no one asked but I'll give anyway:
Original Mirage comics: the guy who started it all but was never meant to be the nemesis he's later become. Pretty plane villain but you have to start somewhere.
80's cartoon: the uncle Phil Shredder. He is nostalgic to me but honestly, I never watched that show as a kid that much.
The live action 90s film: this is the reason I couldn't take cartoon Shredder seriously. This was intimidating villain and I loved him as a kid. Still do.
The 2003 cartoon: the Utrom Shredder is my favorite Shredder ever. I don't care that he was an alien, he was badass. As intimidating as the 90s live action Shredder added with the dramatics of the 80s cartoon Shredder. Compared to him the Tengu Shredder was weak.
The 2012 cartoon: honestly, haven't seen that much.
2014 live action film: no interest to see.
Who is your favorite Shredder? Awesome tribute. FAVE

As a fan of the comic... Ive gotta say that the 2003 series has been the best in my opinion. But I am one of those people who when I think of the turtle it all immediately goes back to the comics for me. I actually get annoyed with people who only know the 80s cartoon. lol

Probably more people know them from the TV show instead of the Comics because TV and films are more accessible than comics, especially for people from other countries.
I know of the comics, but the only ones that i have read is the first one (only because it come with the "visual history of the TMNT") and the bebop and rocksteady mini series from IDW (but those are from a different continuity).
Is more easy turn on the TV that go to a comic shop to buy comics, at least in my country where there is not as many comics as the US (especially self published ones like the originals TMNT), but is easy to watch cartoons (here they aired all the TMNT cartoons and movies except for Turtles Forever).

That may have been true 20+ ys ago when they started out so I 'll take that for what it is, but today I have all mine in digital. lol.
The 80s cartoon was seriously not as cool though. It was just so silly.

I know both and to be honest :
1) The Mirage comics start out even goofier than the 80's cartoon. At least the 80's cartoon acknowledges the craziness of the concept and has fun with it .The 1st issue took itself so seriously it was hilarious ! Hell, it's only around issue 10 that it really got serious and even then, the Eastman-Laird storyline does not even take half the volume .
2) The 80's cartoon does indeed have its problems, but its best episodes remain great and the Turtles are far more subtle characters in it than anyone would give them credit for! I usually reccommend sticking to those. And 80's Shredder might be a buffoon but holy shit was he hilarious ! At least , he was an actual CHARACTER as opposed to the plot device of the Mirage stories.
3) the 2003 cartoon is indeed fantastic but to me, it ends with Season 4. Tale of Master Yoshi was the perfect story to seal it Β ! Past that , Meh !

Despite the innate goofiness of the concept I like it best taken seriously. I mean everything from superman to daredevil always had goofy and out there premises, but I like it when they are handled with the approach that uses those to create something with a deeper sense of tension, rather than camp. The best part for me is if you were to write the story without ever thinking of the word turtle, write a story about "teenage mutant ninja brothers" and then in editing go, "oh yeah they are turtles btw, so see what fun you can have with that".
I liked season 5 the best, with all of the ninja tribunal stuff and the demon shredder. But season with the "fast forward" stuff was a lot of fun too. I was kind of let down by "back the the sewer" though.

I understand , but even that "deeper sense of tension" you talk about was not exactly , perfectly SET within the first Mirage arc. And once again, say what you will about the 80's cartoon , but its best output gave its characters nuances , flesh and potential (hence why we have the Archie and IDW comics ). YES, it is episodic in its nature and does not have story-arc , but it have the advantage of having each episode as a stand alone !
Sorry but Demon Shredder to me was exactly a con againt the 2003 show; I usually have no problems with monsters (in fact I relish them !) , but he's nowhere near as nuanced or memorable as the 80's Shredder and he was a huge step-down when compared to Ch'rell. It just felt that the show grabbed it because it was way too reliant on the Shredder... And I outright dislike FF and BTS.

not the first arc, but by "fugitoid" it had grown a lot. And it wasn't demon shredder that grabbed me for the ninja tribunal episodes, it was more the idea of seeing the brothers steer more towards a spiritual exploration even on a lighthearted level. I like that side. One of my favorite scenes from the first movie was splinters appearance while they sat around the fire.

i guess it's really easy buy stuff in the US, even in other countries people can buy stuff online although for some people that might be a luxury.
the 80s show was silly indeed, but since a lot of people saw it when they where kids and was the first time they see the TMNT is really nostalgic for them, i see it but i dont remember too much about it, but i think is important because it introduce a lot of elements that become important for the franchise like the distinctive colored bandanas and make the shredder a more "prominent" villain (he died in the first number of the original comic).
besides the dark, gritty comic could scare people who aren't familiar with the bizarre concept and the "funny", friendly cartoon could introduce them to the tmnt and then they would want to read the comic.

So do you have a favorite series? I think I liked the last one a little more. But this series Shedder is scary good. Nice tribute.

my favorite series is the Nick one, because although I did see the original series of the 80s i was very young when i saw it and dont remember much about it, Β I saw the 2003 version but the channel that was transmitting it change the schedules to much so i never finish it and I dont like the sequels (fast forward and back to the sewers), i never read the original comics (but i buy the "tmnt the ultimate visual history" and comes with a copy of the original comic), I like all the versions but i think the current series is one of the best iterations of Β the turtles.
I dont know if the new film will be good or bad but that Shredder with blades looks awesome.
