After I made sure Kanie left to go stalk Lu I was walking around the hospital waiting for something to happen. I noticed little Joshy was walking down the hall toward me.

"People always hang up on me." I pouted.

Dropping my stuff off in the locker room, I walked outside. I saw Maria driving off in the distance.

"I wanna know who gave Maria her fucking license, for serious." I didn't bother walking around in the garden or anything, because I knew she would be back in another minute or two.

One thing I keep forgetting though is that all this shit is my fault.

I sighed, listening to the whole hospital buzzing around. I could tell RONI had sent out a notice.

Within the next moment, Maria pulled up right in front of me.

"Wasn't my idea," I explained. "The team wants to know what the hell's going on. And don't change the subject." She flicked water again.

"Gown, gloves," I commanded. Kanie turned around and looked at her.

After they were scrubbed in, Kanie took note of the window at the top of the room. The entire team, minus CRon, was there.

"All non-urgent operations were canceled," I explained. "Lucky you."

"And for what? My operations aren't special or anything." Kanie picked up a scalpel.

"You are the leader of your trauma team, after all. The trauma surgeon is the head." I said it almost angrily.

"Just because I'm the head doesn't mean EVERYONE has to watch. I perform badly when I'm being watched."

"Hurry up, we've only got two hours. Her organs are probably all screwed up right now."

Kanie looked up once again at the crowd gathered around the window. Maria waved. It looked like part of Kanie's soul died.

"Ruby, can you send them away?" Kanie hand was trembling.

"What? Why?"

"I don't do well when I'm watched."

"Just make the initial incision," I snapped.

Kanie breathed out. "Get the retractors." She made a clean incision on Lu's torso.

All of her organs were black and almost dead, as it looked. It was amazing that she hadn't collapsed earlier- or that she was even alive.

"So, what are we going to do?" The nurses muttered worriedly.

I sighed. "Either a full organ transplant, or we remove all of the tumors and colonies. One by one."

"Removal it is."

"W-what? ALL of the colonies. It's different from Rosalia in that removing all of them eradicated the virus, but it's nearly impossible with the time we've got."

"Nearly is good enough for me." She had already removed one tumor in the time I had been talking.

"Jeez, you're fast."

"Hopefully fast enough." Another one.

"H-hey! Isn't that the focus?"

"Mm. You're right. I though you said the entire ORGAN was the colony." Kanie looked up.

I backed away a little. "Alright, I was wrong. So it should be much easi-"

"Nope, there's more. Suction?" Kanie drained the area of mucus. Suddenly, about 6 or 7 foci came into sight on Lu's liver alone.

"Hnngh," I grunted. "Well, I guess I'll have to help." I handed the retractors to a nurse.

After removing all of the foci on the liver, we moved on to her other organs.

"How long?" I was sweating.

"One hour and thirty minutes. You cut the lung, genius."

"Oh. Whupps."

Kanie looked up again. Maria had fallen asleep. Gabe was smoking. Tomoe was the only one watching. She pointed at the operating table furiously and mouthed, "DON'T LOOK AT ME."

"Lungs done," I said. "How long now?"

"Still one hour and… ten minutes. Wow."

"Moving on to her intestines, then." I was getting the hang of it.

"I think we've got everything," Kanie sighed.

"You've missed something."

"What? Where?" Kanie looked.

I sighed angrily. "If you tell me it's the brain, I'm going to seriously- hnnng…"

"Bingo." I sutured the last incision and began the one on the heart.

Kanie sighed again. "Get a heart surgeon in here, then."

"You're good enough. We need a fast worker, and I'll be damned if you aren't a ninja." I finished the incision as nurses rushed forward to hold open the wound.

"Pff. Fine. How does it look?"

"Not as bad as Naomi's, at least. It's pretty black, though."

"Suction." The mucus was drained away.

"And now what? We put her on a heart-lung?" I stared at Kanie.

"Send for one. Hey, uh, what's-your-face." Kanie pointed at a nurse standing in the corner. It was one of the fag nurses.

Instead of mocking her, the nurse nodded quickly and left to go send for the machine.

"I guess they do look up to you."

"Only in the OR."

"How long?"

"Mm… 20 minutes."

I frowned. "If we don't finish open heart surgery in 20 minutes, whatever colonies left in her will explode right in our face."

"Let's not let that happen, then."

The nurse ran back in with a perfusionist to operate the machine. He sat down and, with the help of Kanie and I, connected the machine to Lu's body.

"Fifteen minutes," Kanie said as she opened one of the chambers of Lu's heart.

"Damn." We both set to work removing the colonies from within the chamber.

They finished quickly, and moved on to the next chamber. Kanie glanced up quickly. Gabe had woken up Maria, Hank was finally watching, and everyone had their faces pressed against the window. Tomoe pointed at the table again furiously.

"Ten minutes," Kanie stated.

"Work faster." The chamber was sealed, and the next one was opened.

"Seven minutes." That one was sealed as well.

"We're finished with the atria," I sighed.

"Seven minutes," Kanie repeated. Her hands were shaking.

"Jeez, I got it." The right ventricle was opened, and the colonies removed.

"3 minutes," Kanie said.

"Yeah," I replied. "Last chamber and we're done." I opened the left ventricle.

"Look, there's a colony near the aorta."

"Better be careful," I sneered as she worked on the ones furthest from the aorta.

Kanie breathed out. Carefully, she extracted the colony without it exploding and tearing open Lu's aorta. That would be bad.

"Hnnng," I grunted loudly. "Look, I got one!"

"Shut up," Kanie snapped. She had almost caused the colony to burst.

"Oh. Sorry." I looked down again.

The last colony was removed. Kanie looked at the clock. Ten seconds.

They both did a frantic search around to make sure there weren't any colonies left in the heart, then stepped back quickly just in case there were. The clock ticked down.

Nothing happened.

"Yesss," Kanie breathed out happily. We looked up at the window for what might have been the millionth time.

They were clapping. Everyone was clapping.
