When you get out of the line, the queue goes on and you lose your turn -- a turn to get to an unknown place.

Thorns that make others bleed, but so heavy that they don't allow anyone to get close.
Spikes that grow like grass in spring.
Thorns that harden in the cold of winter and the cold of the human heart.

You don't have a number in your hand, but your feelings-which like water fall through your fingers and leave you only to observe. Drops that reach you, looking for a heart long gone.
