Citizen: I don't want to respect my neighbor's privacy.
Government: That's none of my business.
Citizen: I'd like to kill my wife's child.
Government: Don't let me get in the way.
Citizen: I don't like the draft
Government: That's okay. We'll just let other nations bulldoze over us.
Citizen: This taxing stuff? I don't like it.
Government: Sure. Build your own bridges, highways and schools, and pay the government employees yourself.
Do you see the pattern here?

I'm just saying personal freedoms should be given a great deal of care and treated with caution. They can get out of hand if we're not careful.

the pattern being? yes, the government has to do stuff we don't like at times. but what does that have to do with common sense being completely absent from present governments?

newmanaccount In reply to JoeyTheNeko [2013-09-07 20:48:59 +0000 UTC]
There is no common sense in governments. Ever. Governments are made up of politicians trying to rise to power by juggling public relations and political acceptance. At least, that's the way it is in jolly ole 'merica. This deviation isn't arguing for common sense, though. It's arguing for personal freedoms, and I agree with every one (except the abortion thing a little bit) I'm just suggesting caution when it comes to that sort of thing. Once a political movement is underway it can quickly get out of hand.

Umm...
'Government' and 'Common sense' are mutually contradictory terms...

Well said!
It's so ironic, for a group of people who yell that "homosexuals are forcing their lifestyle on us," they certainly love pushing THEIR lifestyle on everyone.
Separation of church and state for the win.

TheMorganizer [2012-09-26 21:16:29 +0000 UTC]
That's absolutely how it should be.
In another comment you say that you believe everything there. So, do you believe that homosexuality is a sin, since it does say so in the Bible, or are you just against gay marriage?

RubytheWitch In reply to TheMorganizer [2012-09-26 21:20:32 +0000 UTC]
sorry i did not explain myself well enough
i am a lesbian in real life and i want that
what i meant is the people who push for the ban shouldn't because its a religious belief and it should not be banned because its a religious issue
the only exception i take to marriage is polygamy
(only ok in anime)
sorry for not explaining it better

yeah
and whats ironic is i am religious
i beleave everything here
its true i dont like abortion
but i understand that not everyone thinks like me
and this country was founded on freedom of religion
and this is a religious issue. For in some faiths it dont matter. and as long as its performed in a hospital, done by a doctor it should be ok, and the family should support her. This decision is not something we girls take likely. And what i find funny are the ones who push the issue, most are men who wont ever have this choice and only wish to control people.

You're actually a pro-life, anti-gay creationist? Huh. Well, I respect your way of drawing a line between opinion and imposing it on the personal freedom of others.

RubytheWitch In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-09-26 21:16:42 +0000 UTC]
lol i am not anti gay, i am a lesbian
lol sorry if i did not explain well enough. and creationist is not a science and should not be treated as such. i want stuff in church to stay there. i would not expect science in church as well
sorry ^_^; for not explaining well enough

You said "I believe all these things", so I got confused. Sorry.
Glad that we're on the same page. A secular country is a healthy country. ^^

RubytheWitch In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-09-27 14:39:32 +0000 UTC]
yeah
as long as it has morality as well
(not necessarily religion)

Greatkingrat88 In reply to RubytheWitch [2012-09-27 14:48:58 +0000 UTC]
We all have morality, and I'd argue its roots are secular.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to RubytheWitch [2012-09-28 14:16:35 +0000 UTC]
A case could be made for it, easily.

Greatkingrat88 In reply to RubytheWitch [2012-09-29 09:27:13 +0000 UTC]
Well, we know the roots of our morality: it's due to evolutionary survival strategies. Altruism, teamwork, care, all of these were very succesful ways of surviving as a species. Now, morality itself is a lot more complex than that, and has yet to be explained, but we know its roots.

mmmmm that still seems off
i mean it sounds like kindness is not really kindness, from what u say u make it sound like
it was only a trait and not a act of kindness
if i am making sense
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Greatkingrat88 In reply to RubytheWitch [2012-09-29 17:48:34 +0000 UTC]
Well, kindness is still kindness, regardless of knowing where it came from. Knowing why doesn't make it any less special.
