I use varying amounts of water, and usually spend hours making layer upon layer to achieve the desired affect. Certain colours, though not appearing to be very bright on their own, appear much brighter when used with certain others also.

yea like if you put a yellow in a purple field it is intense and same if you use say a cadmium red in a field of sepia or greens

Yup. I also find that highlighting in strong pastel colours adds a glowing affect to the piece.
